    Hello all

I have a quirk with my GC Qoob SX Pro, v1.3

It has just decided to stop reading original GC discs but will read backup discs all day long.

I use Datawrite 4x Printable dics, burning at 4x on Nero 7 with no problems at all, just can't get the orginal discs to read now.

It keeps coming up with Disc Read Error.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

PS. UK users, I buy my discs from www.svp.co.uk which is an excellent and inexpensive site.

As a precaution, check the media ID on those mini DVDs you bought. If it's CMC, then you may want to switch to a different brand since you can cause unnecessary wear to your GC's laser. For future reference, check this page.

Anyway, about the original games. Do any of them work? Some games won't work if you leave the video settings on anything other than auto. If that doesn't work, try booting with the chip disabled by holding B to get to the menu, selecting boot game and picking Original GC BIOS.

You could also try changing the drive mode in the settings to the other one. There's an A and B, but I don't remember what it defaults to. The one that it defaults to is the drive mode designed for 1.3c, whereas the other one is from the 1.3a BIOS.

The discs I'm using are 4x Datawrite printables.

What's the craic with CMC as I've just bought some 8x for my PS2 backups?

None of my original games are currently working in the QOOB. All the backups do though!

I've just bought a laser so I'm gonna change that and see how it goes. Mrmodchips dot com for under £20 delivered. Bargain!

Thanx for the advice again. I'll give it a go!

Since the back-ups work, I highly doubt it's an issue with the laser itself. Reason being, the originals are far easier for the GC to read than the back-ups are, and if it can't read the originals the back-ups shouldn't work either.

I'm still willing to bet it's a settings issue or the BIOS is just giving you problems. You could also try downgrading to the 1.3a BIOS since it's supposedly more stable than 1.3c

What settings need changing and how do you change them? Should I flash the BIOS via the Ethernet cable or a disc?

Wish the GC was as easy as a PS2!!!

Cheers again Venom for your help

    Try this first.

Turn on the GC with an original game inside and hold B to go to the main menu. Select boot game and instead of selecting the game select Original BIOS. If it works, then something in the qoob's settings is preventing it from booting. If it doesn't, then something else is wrong and I don't know what to tell you...

If the game booted just fine with the original BIOS, then try these steps to get it working with the qoob.
    1. Set video mode to Auto for game. You can change it back later if you have to. To change it, just hold B on boot and select settings from the menu. Try booting the game and see if it works now. If it doesn't...
    2. ...then try changing the drive mode. I don't remember what the default drive mode is, but it's going to be either A or B. Just change it to the other one and see if it makes a difference. If that doesn't work either...
    3. ...then flash the 1.3a BIOS using whatever method you prefer. I suggest using the disc though, since it's safer.

All the settings were at AUTO for both the QOOB and GC

The Drive Mode is set at A.

I've changed both the settings to PAL and that seems to work so far when booting both from the original BIOS and the QOOB.

I'm still not convinced this will solve the problem as i tried to backup a game, Cars, and it failed. I've tried it again but won't know the result until I get home in just over 1 hour!

I might try a new laser in it also, just incase. What do you think?

I've tried every which way on the QOOB SX settings but to no avail. I just cannot get original games to load.

Can anyone suggest how I flash the BIOS so I can either update it to 1.4 or back date it to an earlier version.

Also, does anyone have an earlier version of the BIOS as I have searched high and low and cannot for the life of me find one to download.

When burning the disc, does it have to be filled with rubbish files along with the GCB file? to take it up to 1.5gb?

modthatcube has all the qoob BIOS files in their download section. Try going back to the 1.3a BIOS and see if it makes a difference.

Just put about 600 megabytes of garbage data and you should be fine.

I still find it odd that retail games won't work while backups do. When I had problems with my laser my backups stopped working before my originals did.

If it still doesn't work with the 1.3a BIOS, you might want to double check your installation.

    Further developments....

I purchased a QOOB Pro as I was fed up with the SX and guess what? The Pro won't play backups! OMG! I am pulling my hair out as it's meant for a Christmas present and with 2 days to go, I'm well and truly stuffed like the turkey!

I have flashed the PRO with all the versions of the BIOS available and it makes no difference.

The guy I bought it off used full dvd discs to play his backups and apparently had no problems. I'm using Datawrite 4x mini discs and whilst these play fine on the PRO, the SX won't play them!.

Venom, you mentioned something about the installation. What did you mean by that? All the wires are in place and I was using the SX without any probs until it stopped reading original discs.

I did notice that the POT reading was aroun 800 ohms. Should i try taking it down for both the SX and PRO to see if that makes a difference?

Happy Christmas everyone, hope you are all having better luck than me! lol

Also, trying to downgrade the SX BIOS to 1.3a. Have put the info onto a mini-disc (along with 600mb+ of crap on it) and it's being read by the QOOB.

I hold the left button on the joypad, and also press B. I get a screen straight away upon re-booting saying "Waiting for network Upda". Please restart.

Anyone heard of this and if so what should i be doing to get rid of it?
