Hi folks... this is more a personal question I think.. but anyway, here goes... I was curious when I make backups of the longer movies I own. I understand that movies 2 hours or under look quite exact as the original, but movies 2 and a hour or longer have to be compressed to fit on a to hour dvd (to 4.36 gig). Now my question for this is, do adding subtitles degrade the quality of my backup dvd video? If I make a backup of a 2 and a half or 3 hour movie, and dont use any subtitles, will I get a better quality video then if I was to add the english subtitles using dvd2one? I was curious to this as the subtitle have to take up at least a little bit of space in that 4.36 gig... Any advice here would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much in advance!
Won't make much difference. Try to leave out foreign audio, or commentaries and extras. Good luck, Paul.
As Paul said it doesnt make much difference, if any at all really. Sub titles, i think, are only something like 10MB for each movie. I think you should be able to spare that no problem! Put your extras on a second disc and buy DVD 2 disc cases!!
Are you serious?!?!? 10 meg a movie..??! I was thinking of not using the subtitles just to be able to keep better video quality... Guess I'll keep the english ones!
Whilst I am not practising what I preach (I compress even 8GB movies including all extras, and all streams to 4.36GB!) you will get better quality if you remove the superfluous streams, like audio (especially commentaries) and subtitles. The extra space from subs will not be siginicant, but if all you want is highest quality compressed movie on a single DVD-R with no extras, then DVD2ONE it as we have stated. Good luck and happy burning Paul.
ok, all ive been doing is making backups of just the movie and 1 ac3 audio track... didnt know how much more degredation I would get by adding in 1 english subtitle, or if it would make an amazing difference in video quality if I left that 1 english subtitle off...
I doubt you would notice. I certainly don't, but (sigh) there are those out there who would insist it makes all the difference ;-) A few subs left out on a tight squeeze might make a slightly noticeable improvement, but not much. Paul.
What AC3 audio track are you inlcuding? The two channel or 6 channel? If you are only going to choose one, and want playback on both 2 channel and 6 channel, i would choose the 2 channel as most 5.1 systems can distribute stereo around all speakers anyway, it isnt the case in reverse. Paul supplied me with quite a good link, i think it might interest you as well, if you are unsure about the types of AC3 channels. if you know all this, i apologise for sounding patronising: http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/products/powerdvd/5/pdvd5_presale.jsp#promo
The thing is, whilst you can play stereo through all speakers (yes I know there are proprietary systems like the Bose which takes two channel and makes it 5) you won't actually get surround sound. What you will get is sound from 5 speakers, quite a different thing. Lets say a jet comes towards the screen, sound starts from the middle speaker and from each front side (though lower volume). Lets say the jet then flys overhead of the camera and banks right, the sound will transfer from front speakers to the rear speakers quickly, with emphasis from the right. There will still be sound from the left, though less (obviously this is trying to mirror the real world, where you hear from the ear not near the source, as you haven't gone deaf!). This would be lost in a stereo recording (except for the banking) and once encoded as 'simple' stereo cannot be extrapolated from the source. All I am saying is that sound coming through 5 speakers does not mean you have surround sound More like all round sound. Or 'lots of sound, not really great sound, but plenty of it.' Hmm, I wonder if Dolby will patent that? Paul.
lol...thats exactly how i used to explain the difference between dolby pro logic and dolby 5.1 to customers in my electric store when i workd there. Have you been tapping into my mind. I mean, its exactly the same, down to the plane banking right. Hmmm.......SPooKY
