Hi all... I am very new to this, so bear with me. How good of quality are Divx or Xvid avi files? Is there a way you can tell what kind of quality your avi file is by some properties or bitrate information? Is the quality of the picture better if you just play it as a Divx file on a compatible Divx DVD player without actually CONVERTING the file to dvd or is converting the file to a dvd going to be of better quality? Sorry for so many questions and thanks in advance.

Best way to tell the quality is to watch it. If it looks good, then the quality is good. The bitrate depends on resolution and how compressable it is. Average quant would be worth looking at though if you must go on figures.

DVD uses MPEG-2, which is lossy. Therefor the original will always be of higher quality. Whether you or anyone else could pick the difference or not is a different matter.
