The analog stick on my PS3 controller is starting to hang up a little bit. It just gets stuck in certain places. Is there a way to relubricate the sticks so that they operate like when the controller was brand new. I know that it is possible to open the controller up so that you can replace the battery, but I wasn't sure if it was safe to tinker with the analog controls. This is my only controller and I don't feel like screwing it yup further. Anyone have this problem in the past. My PS2 controllers are really bad. I guess they just wear down from use.
My controller is less than a year old and it's gotten pretty bad. I wonder if there's a way to fix it?
I had one that did the same thing. After opening it I was able to roll the stick around and it freed up nicely. Be carefull the ps3 manual makes it sound easy to open the controller, but I fix a lot of ps3 controllers and consoles and I had a hard time with the small peices the first time I opened the controller.
I got mine at launch so the warranty is out. Anyone ever use WD40. I was thinking that I might try it on my PS2 controller just to see what happens. Hopefully this will fix it without having to take the controller apart.
My problem is similar, but not entirely the same (maybe it is, who the hell knows?). The sticks don't get stuck or hang up in certain places, however, the character on screen will continue to walk in the last direction. For example, if, in COD4, I'm running towards an enemy to stab him, and he spots me and I try and back off, I'll still be running towards him. Again, the analogue sticks revert to their default position but the character still moves on its own. It's very frustrating because it usually happens at the worst time (like after I take out like 3 or 4 players in COD4, and the 1 guy I don't take out, I'm running towards him blindly). I interpret it as a sign that the controller is going (duh). I've had it since launch. I already have my replacement waiting in the wing. Anyone else experience something like this?
The same thing happens to me Mr.Pink. The controller seems to get locked into one position for about 3-5 seconds. I love it when you start spinning in circles on COD4, a certain recipe for death. I figured that they would eventually fix the problem with a new firmware update...nothing yet. Personally, I think they should replace the controller even if it is more than a year old.
Yep I got the exact same problem as you, it is THE most aggravating thing ever. And my stick sticks to boot. Sony really dropped the ball on the sixaxis, is the DS3 better quality wise I wounder because I've been waiting to buy another controller hoping that it will be better. I've pondered that WD40 idea myself, well I was thinking vegetable oil, same difference I suppose. I think it would work but you would have to get it deep in because it feels like the spring or whatever is keeping it in place is the culprit and not just the gunk on the analog stick itself. If anyone can solve either of the problems you have my permission to wear a cape and pretend to be superman.
Ah, the spinning in circles. I forgot to mention that. How did I forget that? lol Did I mention in Burnout Paradise, in a race that I've been trying to beat for god knows how long, all I had to do was make it around a bend and soar to the finish line, but oh yes, the car was locked and loaded and was aiming for a wall. At the very least, it was a spectacular crash lol.
After I get my DS3 or another controller I'm going to take mine apart and get to the root of the problem, and figure out what has to be done to fix it. I'd do it now but I've only got one controller and as annoying as it is I can't spare the money for another sixaxis when 3 months down the road when its going to bite the dust like the others. I figure the problem either lies in something something gumming up the works or a spring wearing out. As for the locking up problem there shouldn't be anything physical causing the problem that one could simply see.
DO NOT USE WD40! I just took one of my PS2 controllers apart. I cleaned it with compressed air and a q-tip with some rubbing alcohol on. The rubber thumb pads come off revealing the analog mechanism underneath. I sprayed some WD40 on them and manually manipulated them (moved 'em around). I put the controller back together but now if feels like there is no lubrication on it at all. I think the original lubrication was a kind of "jelly", which the WD40 has dissolved. The controller does not stick now which is good, but there is a kind of metal on metal grinding sensation when you use it. For anyone out there who is thinking about trying to fix the analog sticking problem, I highly recommend starting with a PS1 or PS2 controller, one that you don't mind destroying. Mine is still very usable but it doesn't feel 100% right either. Now that I have taken the controller apart I am confident in giving it another try if anyone has any other ideas as far as lubrication is concerned.
