Question about converting .dat to avi

hi i tried converting a .dat file that i found on a vcd wich is a mpeg with a diferent extention i think.
but here's the problem when i convert it using river past video cleaner the file size con up to a 1gig almost 2 I also wanted to know why if I converted using the divx codec why the film machine wont open it >?

Thanks but the thing is that i want to add some subtitles to the movie and i cant if i use that app !! or cant i ?

 

I believe that ConvertXtoDVD can create DVD's with seperate subtitle streams.
