Can you put a regular PC's DVD drive in the xbox and will it work, or does it have to be an Xbox specific drive like the Thompson drive?

If you can use a PC DVD drive, does getting say a 16x drive for it speed up load times?

Thanks, I know it's a dumb question, but I appreciate the help in advance.

You can use a Samsung SD-616T or SD-616F,from a pc. You need to solder a few things and flash the firmware or look on Ebay for a plug and play model. Actually you need to look on Ebay for the drive period,as it is no longer made. The other drive is an LG GDR-8163B.

Now if you only want to play backups,a regular pc drive will work. However they will NOT play original games. The ones listed above WILL
