Is there a way to share files and use internet sharing between two computers?

I got it setup like this. My main comp has two lans and feeds internet over to the other comp via ics. The seconday comp cant access files on the primary, but the primary can access the secondary no problem. Is there anyway round this?

Drop your firewall on the first one, depending on how you have it set up.

hmm...now i rebooted both of the comps and I can access both and have internet access by disabling the firewall on the lan serving the secondary computer, but is both of the comps still protectd by the firewall on the lan hooked to the internet?

if 1st computer firewall still enabled than both somewhat protected. get a router which has a built in firewall & can attach upto 4 computers to it.

I do have a router...i Have a linksys ddp. Can you share files between two computers with a router or is it just to share internet access?

How would I set it up if so? Thanks!

First of all, what model LinkSyS router do you have? Why do you have your second computer connected via a second LAN card in your main computer? Why not through one of the router outputs?

Are you using CAT5 cable to connect everything?

I have the comp running with two lan cards so I can share files and also have internet access for the second one. I wasnt aware that the router supported both file sharing and internet access. Im trying to fix the second comp for brownie points for my boss and most of my test proggies are on my main. No Im not making nothing off this...wish I was. He had the second all screwed up.

Its a linkysys WRTP54G. Im not sure what cat5 is, but Im using ehternet cable not usb hookup. What would have to do? Configure the router or just jook both to the router and use the network wizard?:>

if both using xp than do ipconfig/release on the 2nd computer, disconnect it's cable from 1st computer & do the same to the 1st computer. attach the net cables from the modem to the wan not lan port on the router. attach the cet cables to lan ports on the router to the 2 cables. do the ipconfig/renew on the 2 computers seperately

Im confused now. I got 4 ports for different computers and one incoming from the modem. Plus two telephone jacks for the voip.

So I would leave the one to the modem alone and then hook computer one to port one on the router and the second comp to the second port on the router....right? Or am i missing something.:>

Would I have to configure the router or should it automatically adjust itself?

I seem to be having the same problem, or similar. I have a laptop and desktop that have access to a adsl gateway. They can both access the internet which is plugged into the back of gateway. The problem is I can't transfer files between the two. I have tried pinging each other. Not succesful. I can ping the gateway from each machine but not through it to the next machine. All firewalls are switched off. My desktop connects by cat 5 and laptop by wireless. I use a linksys wag54G V1 GATEWAY with updated firmware. File and printer sharing is enabled on both machines. I know this is set up because I have a crossover cable that i used to use and everything worked fine then. Just since i used the gateway they can't communicate.

Any help guys. DDP you there?

Sounds like ya got access the gateway and change settings. Dont know if its different than a router, but with my linkysy router I punch in the ip addy of the router and it brings me to a login screen for the router settings. If ya never accessed it before its probally admin and admin for user and pass....make sure to change both once ya access it. Now this must be the case for ya gateway....cause it sure as hell sounds like a rotuer.:>

Example ip for router 192.168.15.1 Ya would punch that in the goto box in ie and hit enter. But I dont know the ip of ya gateway so check the idiots...ahh excuse me...owners manual...lol!

I call it a idiots manual cause like a idiot Im am never bothered to read it and took me ages to figure it out..lol:>

I have already accessed the gateway. I had to access it to set up the details for my ISP. Ihad to change the settings to rfc2364 pppoa before it would allow me to access the internet. I have turned the firewall OFF on the gateway as it was not allowing any of my comps to connect to it. I have run network wizard on both comps using the same settings for both. I know the IP's for both comps and the gateway. I have tried it with both WAP and WEP security On or OFF. No access restrictions, but still can't my comps communicate to each other!!!!!!!!!!!!
