Hello. I've been looking into modding my PS2 so that I can run ISO backups of my games off of the PS2's hard drive. I've decided to go the softmod route by running HDLoader.elf via a memory card exploit. Here's my plan so far:

I'm going to buy SwapMagic 3.6. I don't want to get 3.8 Coder because I've read that it has compatability and other issues. Next I will burn the Free McBoot 1.8b Noobie Package (which includes HDLoader.elf) from SKS Apps to a CD-R or DVD-R (I'm using this method instead of loading the Noobie Package onto a thumb drive because from my research it appears that SwapMagic 3.6 cannot access thumb drives directly).

I'll run SwapMagic, swap over to the Noobie package disc and then run that to add the exploit to my memory card. I will then add the ISOs to the hard drive by using WinHiip.

    Here's my question:

After I first add the Noobie exploit to my MC, will I then have to run SwapMagic and THEN the Noobie package disc (or at least a burned disc of ULaunchELF) in order to boot from my memory card EVERY TIME I want to run HDLoader and play a game off my hard drive?

Sorry if this has been answered before but after many, MANY searches I just couldn't find it.

Also, if anyone has any ideas to make my plan more simple or anything I'd be happy to hear it.

    Thank you very much!
    Jeremy

PS Here's what I have so far:

    Fat PS2 Version 4
    Memory card
    Compatible hard drive
    Network Adapter

You don't have to go through all that trouble since you have a fat ps2. If you have a ps1 game, you can use this tutorial to install free mcboot 1.8. Its pretty simple, i have a slim ps2 but i went to a friends house who has a fat to install multiversion install. You just have to have action replay max, a ps1 game, and a flash drive. I was lucky because i already had all that stuff lying around, but this is just a suggestion, your way is good too.

Hi gam3r21. Thanks for replying to me. I thought no one was going to reply! I have looked into that option using the PS1 game exploit but in the end I decided against it. Partially because getting the SLUS number and editing in Notepad sounds a bit too complicated but mostly because I don't own a copy of ARMax that has the media player. I could buy one but from my research it's getting hard to find a copy of ARMax that actually has the media player necessary for the exploit. I've read in some 2 year old posts that ARMax EVO carries the media player but the cheapest I can find that is on eBay for $40. I can get SwapMagic for $25. And on top of all that for all I know the more recent releases of EVO may have shut down the ability to even do the memory card exploit or have gotten rid of the media player like the other versions have. The forum posts I read about EVO still having the media player were a bit old.

So that's my reasoning. Do you know if I will need to use some kind of disc swap technique every time I want to boot from my memory card and run HDLoader?

    Thanks again.

Once you install free mcboot 1.8 on your memory card, you wont need to use your swapmagic disc. With free mcboot, when you turn on your ps2, it loads a custom OSDSYS 9the menu you see when you turn on your ps2 without a disc in the drive). If you install the noobie package, you should have the options to go to browser, ulaunchelf, hdloader, simple media system, esr, reload configuration, and free mcboot configurator.

So the answer to your question is no, just turn on your ps2 without a disc in, it should come up with your custom menu.

Now, you really dont even need swapmagic anymore. You can use the esr that came with the noobie package, you save the iso of a ps2 game to your computer with dvd decrypter, and then patch the iso with esr patcher 24a. once you've got the patched iso turn dvd decrypter into iso>read mode, select the iso you patched and click the big burn button. When you put your new disc into your ps2 esr should load and hit load disc.

Hey. Thanks for getting back to me. I'll give the ESR thing a shot. Just so I understand, when I burn the patched ISO to DVD and load it in my PS2, I select load disc and then from there I'm able to load the FMCB exploit to my memory card? My fat PS2 v.4 is not modded in any way yet.

    Thanks again.

EDIT: I re-read your reply and I think I see what you mean now. You're saying that I do still need SwapMagic but only to load the Free McBoot exploit onto my memory card in the first place. The ESR patching thing I can't use until after the exploit is installed, right?
