I've been looking at their games for a while and am really liking L4D as well as HL2. I'm looking to purchase them in the next while but I am wondering how the retail copies deal with DRM. I'm reading about this 'steamworks' garbage that is starting to come with some games that strongarm you into using steams services, which I am not so much a fan of.

If I buy the retail copy of either game will it force me to use steam?

I know left 4 dead does, but it isn't a hassle. Plus l4d comes with the source SDK engine, which there are a lot of really great mods out for it.

That's too bad. I'll never lock the software I buy into some companies server online. Sounds like HL2 might be a safe purchase for me though. I understand that the online nature of L4D lends itself to steamworks anyways but there times I would be LAN'ing it with others in the future without having to get permission to play the game i bought every 30 days.

I might be weak and give in.

L4D via Steam this weekend, 25$.

I feel weak. Even if I completely lose the ability to play the game in the future because of steamworks, getting all of that play for 25$ doesn't seem so bad. I am also going to post this in a new thread. Not because I am trying to spam, but so others might know about this.

yea, i saw that price...good deal.
But there is a non-steam patch for L4D but I don't know a lot about it, so I can't say if it is good. Try it and see
