Anyone use the "DVD" template versus like the NTSC (Film) or SVCD? Any noticeable difference?
Well, the DVD template is meant -- just like the name says -- for DVD encoding, while SVCD template is meant for SVCD encoding. Various MPEG streams have some differences in their structure as well as in quality (MPEG-1 and VideoCD are not encoded in the same way, the structure is bit different).
How about file size differences or "quality"? And of course overall all time to encode?
Both formats use same MPEG-2 encoding routines, so the difference is in resolution and in bitrate -- DVD resolution is full resolution (704x576 in PAL) and SVCD resolution is 480x480 (NTSC) or 480x576 (PAL). Maximum bitrate for DVD is 9.8MBit/sec and for SVCD it is 3.5MBit/sec -- bitrate is the factor that defined how much space the video takes and it can be determined before you start encoding.
