Panasonic DMR-ES40V (VCR/DVD recorder combo) can connect to component input using 480p. Using the setting menu I selected 16:9 TV and the use of 480p output. The problem I face is that when I watch a regular TV channel the image is streched and it looks awful. I expect that the only thing that would fill the screen would be DVDs recorded in 16:9. Did any owner of Panasonic DMR-ES40V figure this out?

You are correct, the picture is stretched, you can only get a quality 16:9 picture with a compatible source.... Regular TV / Cable / Sat...

    Is not 16:9.

When you figure it out please let me know. One last thing. I watched a DVD on thois unit yesterday and wanted to see how much time was left in the film and could not figure it out? Is this possible to do? I was able to see what chapter it was on but not a countdown to the end.

    Thanks

I tried to transfer my first video to DVD yesterday and inserted my HP DVD +R 8X media and the display shows error, screen display said incompatible media. I thought it can use DVD +R media. Mine is also 8X, should I use a different type of write speed media?

    Thanks for your imput

Yes, I believe you must finalize the disc before it can be played on any other machine. Once you finalize it the DVD cannot be changed again.

Joe you need to make sure that your DVD is finalized before it will play on another player.
