i brought a internal hard drive that is maxtor 6L300RO which is 300GB
but when i format it the total space on the drive is 279GB not 300GB
so i was wondering where did the 21GB go???

that's just what happens in the formatting process. it was all explained in detail to me some time ago, but i've mostly forgotten the reason. it has something to do, i believe, with microsoft setting 1 GB at 1024 MB while the rest of the tech world sees 1 GB as 1000MB.

don't fret. on my 80 gig drives, i only have 73 gigs listed; the ratio stays about the same on up.

okay, it was 74.5 gigs, not 73. nevertheless:

    74.5/80= 0.93125

    (300)(0.93125)=279.375

that's just an approximation, really. like i said, don't fret. that's exactly how your drive is supposed to be.
