My xbox360 froze with Halo 3 about 4 days ago and now I got the RROD , but the 360 still works 8/10 times I power it off. Microsoft wants me to pay for repairs even though I still have 4 months of the consoles original warranty left. I told them I had warranty and they said I didn't. But the console is only 8 months old. I still have the Warranty card also so I might send that along with the 360.

    Now my question(s) are:
    1) will the "Towel Trick" void my warranty if I try it?
    2) How come my Xbox360 still works time to time even though I get the RROD most of the time I power it on?
    3) If they release a Dashboard update, will it fix the RROD since my Xbox360 functions fine when it works?

When my console does work, it doesn't freeze at all and works flawlessly. I played Halo 3 on it for 8 hours yesterday with no problems. I switched over to GoW and played for a few hours. Why does the console do this? I thought when you got the RROD, the console was always supposed to freeze with games.

When I power my 360 on I hear the fan start and the DVD Tray does eject when I push eject, just I get RROD and no audio/video.

    1) No, unless you leave it on for TOO long, otherwise it shouldn't have a drastic effect.
2 and 3) The RROD is not a problem with updates or software. It is a problem with your xbox 360 hardware, usually caused by bad ventilation or overheating that often happens with 360's.

Some more info about it Here

Sometimes RROD happens when ur power cord is not pluged in all the way correctly. When I took my 360 to a friends house I got a RROD 3 times back to back. So then I unplugged the power cord and re pluged it. Then my 360 worked.

Also happend last month too and I did the same thing. I unplugged it and left it for 1 day without turning it on. Then the next day I pluged in the power cord firmly and it worked.

    No RROD again since...

I was wondering about the RROD since my xbox has never overheated and has great ventilation. I also plugged the cord in all the way and it does it.

A software update fixed my friends console. He explained it as a bad dashboard update gave him the RROD but when his system worked and he updated it, it worked again. That was almost a year ago and he hasn't had the RROD ever since.

If you've only had your xbox for 8 months then you are covered by your warranty - unless you've hacked your xbox! If you hacked it, then you probably shouldn't have! If not, then you should be covered regardless ... Didn't they extend the warranty for 3 years or something? I know the RROD is definitely covered more so than any other problems ...

If you do want to send your console in speek with a supervisor in America to set up the repair and tell them that the guy in India said you were out of warranty... I now have confidence in the repair center.. I fell the quality control has gone up since I have had my repairs done!

I agree 100% - I spoke to someone in India or whereever they are and after trying to get a supervior and an hour on the phone, I was hung up on. I then spoke to someone in Canada who was really good - MUCH better than the Indian ... and then later, I spoke to someone in Texas who, after barely explaining my problem, just told me to get ready to send it in for repairs - she didn't even want to listen to the whole story (which would have been the 100th time explaining the situation) ... She just gave me the information for sending it in, and that was that ... I think I called late, maybe after 10 or 11pm MST ..

I spoke to a supervisor and they said I do have the 3 year warranty. He also said that after I sent in my Xbox360, if they couldn't repair it, they would send me a brand new one with a free game. He also apologized for the woman telling me that I "didn't" have warranty.

All I have to do is wait for my box, write the reference number on a slip of paper along with a description of what as happened, put my xbox in, and send it in. He said it would take about a week or two to fully repair my system.

My friend got the RRoD recently, and they didn't even offer to repair it, they just said they would send them a whole new one, since it had happened to so many other people

Awesome about the xBox ... it'll take a week to repair, but the shipping they use takes 3 - 5 business days to get there and 3 - 5 business days to get back ... thats how it was for mine several months ago. It was almost 3 weeks total. I didn't have RROD, my xbox would just lockup when playing crackdown - and ONLY crackdown. No RROD, just freeze at various times. I evern tried a new disc after returning the first one, but it didn't work. They didn't repair mine either, they gave me a new one ... different MAC, different serial. Its been perfect ever since.

They dont ACTUALLY send you a "new" one just a refurbished one that someone else has sent in. Just FYI. and yes also you have 3 years starting on the date they issued it.

How is refurbished not the same as new, aside from the fact that its not in a retail box? There's not much to an xBox ... if everything has been tested, cleaned, and broken parts replaced, then its as good as new ... which is nearly new ... which is just as good as new in my opinion - at least they extended the warranty so these problems can be fixed!

Well the supervisor said they would sed me a brand new one in the retail box. I know one of my friends got an Elite back by mistake. He sent in his Premium model 360 and they sent him an Elite back, but with no HDD.
