I want to know how you take episodes from a dvd recorder and put them on the computer to be able to edit them and make the really cool menus so they can play on dvd players. I am new to the terms so you can explain what they mean so I can learn what I am doing. I want the best quality too. I have windows movie maker, roxio disc copier, dvd shrink, VOB2MPG, and the Nero that comes with Win XP.

If I record them on LP so I can get 11 episodes on one disc, can I somehow fit more on the disc from the computer but with the same quality or better? I want to record on SP but only 5 fit on a disc so is there a way to record on SP but fit more onto a disc from the computer like compress or something like that?

I tried using this program called DIKO to make the menu but I don’t know where the finished product went, lol, is there a program out there like that to make the menus that is easier or is that one ok to use?

I just want the easiest and fewest programs to make my dvd's.

this is how I di it.

Record the shows on my DVD recorder.

Rip to the computer using DVD Decrypter.

Then I use TMPGEnc DVD Author to edit out commercials change chapter points and add simple menues.

DVD Lap Pro can create cool menues but you have to convert the DVD files to MPeg first I believe.

I rip to my hard drive using DVD Decrypter or DVD Fab ... I edit out the commercials using either DVD Shrink or Nero Recode2 ... I create menus with NeroVisionExpress3 ...

And yes, you can shrink your episodes down as small as you wish (even 11 to a disc) but the more you shrink, the poorer the quality becomes .. I usually only put 3 1-hour or 5 ½-hour episodes on a disc ...

I have them in my windows movie maker (not sure how I got them there, I have tried many different free programs) how do I then get it to where I can put it onto DVD when I try to burn it, it never shows up in the folder I have it in, like it needs to be in a different format or something.

I need someone to explain the process to me like what all the formats mean, like mpeg, or video_ts, ect.

    thank you so much.

    catfreak,

Is it possible to edit out commercials with DVDShrink? If it is how do you do it?

It's a very simple procedure to edit out commercials using DVD Shrink ... I really don't have much time this evening to go into details but depending how familiar you are with Shrink, maybe this will help ..
    http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/Setting Start.pdf
If a program has 3 commercial breaks, you need to do the 'start and end frame' routine for each of the program's 4 segments ...

Hope that this helps .. if you need more help, re-post and I'll check in Monday

    catfreak,

I have tried your suggestion on the segments. My movie had commercials seven times. So I used start/end frames eight times. Each time I dragged (title 1) over to DVD Structure and set the start/end frames. It created Title 1,Title 1(2),Title 1(3)....Title 1(7). After I selected backup, it did create a Video_TS folder without the commercials. But when I play the movie in PowerDVD it plays like eight different movies, with a pause between each segment. There's eight different VOBs all under 300 MB each. Is there something that I can do to create one smooth running movie? Or is there a way I can tell DVDShrink to treat the eight titles as one movie?

I use NeroVisionExpress3 to smooth out the pauses that Shrink creates ...

Here is a guide showing you the basics ..
    http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/NVE Basics.pdf

if you click to page three of the guide ... when you add your files, you will see all 8 of your segments and they will have that blue highlight .. to the left of that, you'll see a red dot with two blueish dots below it .. the center dot (upper blue) will combine all of the segments ...

Most of the functions will give you instructions if you place your cursor over them and pause

OK, I tried it. But when I went to create the DVD, it started transcoding the files. I don't understand why it needs to transcode when my files are already in VOB format.

I'm not sure either, but it does for some reason .. you will get a good copy that way ... I've had Tv shows with herringbone interference from some moron's CD and the transcoding process eliminated it ... Go figure

Thanks for your help. I guess if I want it done faster, I need to buy TMPGEnc DVD Author when my trial runs out. I was just seeing if I could accomplish the commercial cutting with freeware and Nero. It looks like I can. But it looks like it will take me a lot longer to accomplish.

One thing about Nero is that it can accomplish just about anything you need done to DVDs and CDs ... I'm still discovering things it can do, and I've had the program for maybe two years ...

I guess I can also accomplish the commercial trimming using Nero. Bringing it down to using one software. I go into video editor and click the scissors to go into cut mode.

Nero Recode2 was written by the same person who wrote DVD Shrink ...
