Hey guys, still a noob here, when going from avi to dvd, is it me or does the file size get significantly larger? Probably a retarded question but hey, couldn't find it anywhere. ; )

The file size is supposed to get larger. AVI is a form of compressed video. When converting avi to DVD, the avi is converted to DVD compliant MPEG file, which is much larger than an avi.
