+R, -R, and write speeds????

    I am trying to back up DVD's. I don't really understand all the mumbo jumbo about +R, -R and all that. Can someone tell me what I should be buying as far as the "R" part and also what write speed I need to buy? I don't really get when the DVD's will have 4x, 6x, 8x on the packaging. So confused. I just don't want to be buying too high quality DVD's when I don't NEED them to still get a good copy. I don't have tons of money as a college student...lol!
