Ok, I've got my NEC 3520A installed... will be upgrading the Firmware so that i can Bitset... But i need help understanding which format is used for what. What do the +/- Formats do? I know that you have to use + format to use the Bitset... so that all DVD Readers sees the DVD as a DVD_ROM (so all DVD players can read it) Correct? Other then using the bitset, what is the + format for? I'm at the store looking at R's and RW's but I dont know which +/- format i need. Thanks all for the help!
Bitsetting enables a + disc to be recognized as a DVD-ROM. - is compatible with the vast majority of DVD players and + is almost as compatible. Basically, if you have a dinosaur DVD player that doesn't like one or the other media (+ or -), bitsetting with + should make it readable. For the most part, whichever format you choose is strictly a matter of preference. Some will tell you that some burners make higher quality burns with one or the other, but, personally, if you have a good burner and if you use quality media, there should be no reason to HAVE to choose one over the other(provided YOUR player plays both). Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are arguably the BEST media choices out there. If you use either of these, you shouldn't have to worry which format to use. As far as "branded" media, ie Sony, Maxell, TDK, etc; it seems that the + formats are "Made In Japan"(denoted just above the barcode on the packages, and the - formats are "Made In Taiwan" (likewise denoted) for the most part. The consensus is to stay FAR away from media made in Taiwan. Verbatim seems to be the rare exception to the made in Taiwan rule and Taiyo Yuden is made in Japan in both formats.
Understood, because you said that both formats are read by pretty much all the players, and the ancient DVD-Player I have dosent read anything other then DVD-ROM... it looks like the + format is what i should be sticking with. I was planning on getting the DVD+R Verbatiem DataLifePlus 50-pack... I also wanted to get a few RW's, but the only one's I were able to find are Fugi, which comes in + or - I didnt see Fugi on your list... should I just stear clear of them?
Fuji in the + format is usually made in Japan and is good quality... Just look above the barcode for that inscription.
