    Hey all,

Can anyone tell me if the Megahertz rating has to match? I have an old samsung 256MB ddr sdram pc2700 166Mhz 64 bit 184 pin. I would like to replace it with a 1gig pc2700 184 pin, but they only show it with 333Mhz. Does this matter? Should I match the old Mhz, or is it ok to crank it up to 333Mhz?

    Thanks
    Waddz

IMHO, you're better off with just the single 1GB stick. You didn't say what your CPU's FSB rating is, so I will assume for now it's 266MHz? Set the memory speed in your BIOS to match. Usually it's 100%, not SPD.

Edit: If the CPU's FSB is 333, leave the memory on Auto (or SPD).

Thanks for the reply, I forgot to mention it was 166Mhz. I was told that a 333 is ok, that the stick will run ok stepped down. Is that correct?

In case you get confused, a CPU's FSB rating of 166Mhz is actually 166x2, or 333Mhz. So PC2700 memory, which has a 333Mhz FSB rating, will match your CPU at a 1 to 1, or 1:1 ratio.

Get the 1GB mem stick rated at 333Mhz which is named PC2700.

    Learning tip: Memory ratings after the PC are divided by 8 to get the Mhz frequency. PC3200 / 8 = 400Mhz, PC2700 / 8 = 333...etc.

    Thanks a bunch Morph, That is exactly what I did, I ordered a 1gig pc2700 333Mhz.
so I got lucky for a change. I should have it in another day or two. What I did notice is when I removed the stick in slot 2, I noticed that the clip wasn't locked down all the way. I ran the computer for 2 days on a 256M stick, it was really slow but it didn't crash. I put the number 2 stick back in yesterday and still no crashes. I now think it was because the contacts had backed out of the slot a bit. Could that have caused the crashes? Anyway I am going to put in the 1 gig, it can only make it better anyway.
    thanks again for your help!
