I am looking to upgrade my 3 year old machine with an additional stick of 512 DDR400. I currently have 2 256MB sticks in dual channel. What would be my best option? I use my computer for web surfing, downloading torrents, and copying and encoding dvds. I am thinking the single stick of 512 will do. I am not even sure if I will see a difference. Is it worth the $50 to upgrade??
For $50, I'd say go for it. You would see a performance in running aplications, certainly. Things like ripping/burning etc. of DVD's wont change because that all has to do with the speed of your drive. Same goes for internet connection. Just make sure you are buying RAM that is compatible with your motherboard. That is the killer. What type of RAM did you say you were getting? If your system is 3 years old you might only be compatible with 168-pin SDRAM. What mobo do you have?

OCZ Technology? I havent really heard much about them. From my personal experience with Asus boards, they can be somewhat particular in the RAM. In cases like this, it really helps to go Brand name. I personally use Kingston. Corsair is usually preferred, but is more expensive. But you can try it. Anyway, your board does support DDR 400.
