i've been copying dvd's for quite a while and 99% of the time all is smooth either with dvdfab, dvdshrink or dvd decryptor. once in a while i come across a disc that has a couple problem files that gum up the works and won't let me copy anything unless i cut those files. i've tried cleaning the discs but that doesn't work. i don't think it has to do with higher tech encode/decode (some of the random discs are old) but am stuck. any thoughts, ideas? thanks in advance.
The advice that 7thsinger gave you has worked on anything that I have ever had a problem with. However, if you haven't already done it in the past you might try the free trial of AnyDVD used with DVD Shrink and see if that helps you through the problem disks.
Agree with 7thsinger. I own both fab plat and anydvd. My fav method of ripping is anydvd and ripit4me
thanks for the comments folks. when i had this problem in the past i tried anydvd but had the same trouble so i decided not to buy it (plus with the exchange rate it's pretty expensive right now). the other reference to processing post-dfdfab can't work because dvdfab won't complete the rip. (doesn't work directly through dvdshrink either). i can use dvd decrypter since it allows me to not rip the problem vobs but then i lose 1/3 of the movie. what's weird is that the movie plays just fine in the dvd player......
just downloaded a copy of imgburn and it's having the same trouble as the other rippers; gets to a certain point in the rip (certain vob's) and basically stalls; keeps trying but not succeeding. other ideas?
ImgBurn is not a ripper. It only burns. If the tools suggested do not work, there's a good your drive may be failing.
Are there other signs that a drive might be failing? This one is about 5 years old and used quite a bit but I didn't know that there was "failure" short of complete shutdown for these. What are the current preferred brands/models these days? As always, I appreciate your help.
The laser could be getting weak. first try giving it a real good cleaning. There are many good brands. My 3 Lite-on drives work well for me.
I just copied and burned a fairly recent movie without any problems so this is all the more puzzling. If I need to I'll get a new drive but with problems being so random is there any way to isolate that as the main problem? Thanks again, you guys are a wealth of information and I appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge.
and boring because it's often a dead end....... thanks for the help, i guess i'll just keep and eye on things and see if/when it happens again if there's anything identifiable.
