Hello I downloaded a folder containing 5 rars of 700mb and one of 582mb totalling 3.98gb. I burned them to a dvd, but when I click on any one of the rars I get an error stating the name and saying "the archive is either an unknown format or damaged". When burning nero had to change the names i think because they were too long. I still have the originals on my hard disk, but when I double click on any of the rars, nothing happens. When I right click on any one of them, the only options available are "open", "open with" and "send to", nothing else. So I did open with and winrar, now winrar shows the contents of the directory containing the six rars, so I tried to extract them from here by both using the extract button and by dragging but it didn't work and I recieved this error "cannot copy file: the file name you specified is not valid or too long, specify a different file name". I tried to rename the rars but I recieve the error "the system cannot find the path specified", this is the same error I recieve when i double click on one of them from winrar. Anyone know how I can get these working? thanks
well you might have a bunch or part rar files e.g somthink par101.rar, somthink part02.rar ... in win rar you need to press extract files and then it will show you the open screen, from there you select all the part rar files and exctract them all at the same time to where you want them extracted. otherwise the rars could be damages (they get damaged easily) if none of these work then maby you havent got enough disc space fofr it to extract it because it needs extra space to work and extract the files. i persume you are low on disc space because you are burning the files to dvd which can be a bad idear for extracting them. well i hope this helps if not leave another post and i will try and help you thurther.
It's not a part rar file thing. Some people have managed to extract them alright, others, most it seems are having this problem. I dont know why, I have tried with winrar and 7zip still no luck.
Try extracting the file to the root of your hard drive (c. The error states that it cant create the file because the name is to large. (Make sure you are extracting to a hard drive and not on the drive you burnt the files to.) Extracting to the 'root' of a drive should fix the problem. Also next time I recommend extracting the files before you burn them to disk. But to each his own I suppose.
