I successfully sofmodded my xbox with SID and the Splinter Cell exploit, using UnleashX as the dashboard. UnleashX has since been upgraded to the latest version. Then I went ahead and successfully put in a new, huge hard-drive. I loaded up a large amount of games and everything went fairly well for a few months. Then, while my daughter was playing a game, the system seemed to crash. I forgot the error message I saw on the screen, but when I turned the box off and then back on, it booted up to the original dashboard. I tried a few times with the same result.

Next, I went ahead and used Frosty's Rescue Disk, which helped me the one previous time I had a problem with the dashboard somehow getting corrupted. The disk helped me FTP and reload the dashboard that time, but this time, the XBOX won't read the DVD. It is as if the xbox is no longer softmodded, or something in the sofftmod itself got corrupt and is acting like an unmodded xbox.

I can't FTP into the system to try to fix the problem. Should I do the whole softmod thing again? If I do, do I lose all the games and applications that now reside on the F and G partitions (huge 500GB drive)? Do I lose anything on the C or E partitions, like user data if I softmod again? Is there something else I can do besides softmod again, or is softmodding again no big deal? What do you think?

    Thanks!

there are similar issues floating around on this forum i have seen....

but some of my tips / answers:
if you softmod again, only the c drive will be erased. so if you softmod again, you will keep all the other partitions.
if you would be able to use the slayer disc, then you can choose the partition (c) that you want to rebuild. so if you are able to run any exploit, you can softmod again with no problem (you might only have to activate the f/g partition using unleash, evox or whatever dash you use). so that data will be safe. i'm not completely sure about saved games. i once took at my harddrive, put it into another xbox. softmodded again. kept all the games and gamesaves on it. loaded up the game, openend the gamesave and it gave me an error. not sure whether the gamesave was linked to the old xbox i played the game in, though the game itself booted up fine...

if you have the eeprom file, you might want to rebuild your hd using the hdm program. if you only rebuild the c drive (only prepare the files for the c drive) and you boot the cd in your computer you get several options. there you have the options to rebuild your hd, it will ask you to rebuild/restore the c drive. you do not have to rebuild any of the other partitions. you can find a set of clean dashfiles (5960)in the download area (then you can softmod again), or look for the c-cheater files. that is a softmodded c drive from one of the member. there is also a file browser option in hdm, so you can copy over files

if you don't have the eeprom, you can also use the hot swap method, then you can copy the files directly into the right partition (either clean ms dash or softmod files of the c-cheater file).

the dvd drive issue is strange. you might try to clean the lens of the drive with a cotton tip and some alcohol. but if the problem is related to the softmod going bad, that will off course do you no good.

if you have the original drive laying around, put that back. try to see if the dvd drive acts normal with that drive (and its dash files).

    good luck
