Yeah that's what I thought too. There's this seller on ebay selling these "TY"'s with the correct media code, but that as the hub id. I was reading his feedback and noticed that some people had something like 45 bad disks out of a pack of 50. I thought that was odd since I've burnt hundreds of TY's and only had 2 bad disks. Ever. (Those were ty-03 btw). Would it be ok to name the seller here so people know to stay away from the guy? I think that if people don't go through his feedback and do a little research, they might get scammed.
I think that your experience coupled with your lesson to read thru a seller's feedback before buying should educate people about the dangers of buying from an untrusted source, but then again, everytime I go into a store I see someone buying Memorex DVD disks... Crazy098, join the club, I think most if not all of the AD veterans have purchased substandard media from time to time, and no matter how many people get on as many soapboxes as we can find, people will still buy cheap stuff.....
I didn't buy them. I was thinking about it, but didn't. I asked the seller to send me a couple free just to check them out and he said ok. Haven't received them yet. I bought some crappy Riteks a while ago, most of them failed, and the ones that didn't are no longer readable (about 1yr old). Since then, all I've ever used are TY's.
@crazy go ahead and let us know the seller's name...that way, we can protect ourselves from the fakes...that would be a SERVICE to the afterdawn community, i don't see anything wrong w/ that~ if you get heat for it, then have the people bring up the issue with me personally...PM me and i will get it taken care of... while i would never personally recommend people buy ANY media off ebay for this reason alone, it's better to be educated and informed when people DO decide to buy media on ebay; much like how you have done your research and decided NOT to buy from this particular seller. @burningas www.supermediastore.com would be my #1 choice... www.rima.com would be my 2nd, but price shop a bit, sometimes rima.com sells the total SHIPPED product price cheaper than supermediastore, but when supermediastore has their sales, it's tough to beat the deal~ docTY~
i just got some ty GH000125 from supermedia store...i ordered 4x and got these 16x i assume....i burned the 4x at 4x and never had trouble. i burned these 16x at 8x and they skip alot..i backed them down to 2x and worked great..i wish they would send what you order.
@mesa i'm actually not too fond of the TYG03s, while they are good quality TYs, i PERSONALLY have better success with the 4x TYG01s and the 8x TYG02s... i think if you honestly compare the 16x rated dvd-r format discs n the market today, out there, the Taiyo Yudens would STILL be in the top 2 choices...my opinion is that the MCC Verbatims might be a little better or tied for the same spot, in terms of quality. i don't use 16x dvd-r format rated discs often, i'm much more of a "dvd+r" guy; but i do have a few hundred of the TYG03s and only like a 50-pack of the 16x Verbatim MCC03RG20s. i burned mine @8x with fairly good results, not spectacular, but acceptable. (for dvd-r format, my best quality scans are on TYG01/TYG02 media) anyways, just curious, what is your make and model # of your burner? if it's an "older" model, a firmware update MIGHT help out a lot in terms of your burner recognizing and adapting to the TYG03s in regards to speed and quality...i NEVER burn ANY of my media @2x, i've always gotten the absolute WORST results when burned below 4x. even my 16x burns produce better quality than my 2x burns, but that's just me~ good luck docTy~
The seller on ebay is silver-tek-media. When I receive the dvd's, please tell me some software to test them thoroughly.
there WAS a thread on here a few months ago regarding this seller...i believe he actually called me an "idiot" for not knowing what i was talking about when it came to GENUINE Taiyo Yudens..LOL another member had purchased media from him and i declared them as being FAKE TYs...he brought the thread to the OWNER of Silver-Tek media's attention and that's when the crap hit the fan~ no worries, we've dealt with him on AfterDawn before...there was even a supporter of his media (i wouldn't be surprised if the poster WAS the owner of said company) LOL..he had like thousands of backups on these FAKE TYs and he said nothing but praise and stuff for the company...who knows? anyways, the POINT of that thread before was to determine whether the media there was IN FACT FAKE or GENUINE..and i concluded they were DEFINITELY 100% FAKE Taiyo Yudens, perhaps the owner thought he would be losing a lot of business or whatnot because i spoke up about the authenticity issue...it's just a FAKE Taiyo Yuden media ID coding on media that is apparently MADE IN TAIWAN; lot of "smaller" brand name dvd media companies do this, so silver-tek is NOT alone in this... whatevers, i proved my point back then...i would link you to the silver-tek media thread, but i'm too lazy to search right now..sorry, i remember it from a few months ago... docTy~
Just want to let everyone know that this place has been very educational and helpful! Thanks!!! I too, bought some DVD discs on eBay a while ago from the seller [bold][silver-tek-media][/bold] and got ripped off thinking they were actually true Taiyo discs. It turns out they are NOT, no valid serials except for some T307 and T322 crap, and I got like 3 out of 5 coasters on those crappy discs. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!! Here is a link to their eBay store: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZsilver-tek_media_storeQQhtZ-1 NOW, I recently bought some 16X DVD discs from this other seller [bold][postalbay][/bold] and I can confirm that they are genuine!!! The inner hub on the discs have numbers that starts with "GH" just as advertised. So far, all the burns have been good. They must be legit! Here is a link to their eBay store: http://stores.ebay.com/Postal-Bay-Store_BLANK-MEDIAS_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ12QQftidZ2QQtZkm So, my conclusion is the same as one of the other guy, not all of them are cons, but once you find a trusted source, eBay or not, stick with them. TAIYO YUDEN #1 FOREVER!!!!
thanks for sharing your experience with us, that will prove helpful to others that consider ebay for their media purchases...i feel for you being scammed by silvertek media though, you are not alone in this~ docTY
Hi guys, came across a guy with a nick midco88 from ebay claiming that he is selling authentic TYs. He a relatively new seller with around 90 ratings. Has anyone dealed with him before? http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZmidco88QQhtZ-1 He claims that he can only ship to Singapore(where i live) if I order 500pcs & above. I've also asked him some questions shown below, his answers r in [bold]bold[bold]. Hi black_wing_diaz, So total price will be 119.99 + 75.55 = 195.54? [bold]Sounds good[bold]. How much more to pay for the insurance coverage?[bold]$3[bold]. Is this item value line or premium line? [bold]This item is Premium line but we do offer Value line if you are interested[bold]. This is an authentic made in japan item right? [bold]All of our Taiyo Yuden DVDRs are authentic. We DON'T sell imitation or 3rd party products[bold]. Lastly, is there a TYG02 media ID coding & GG00xxxx inner hub reading? [bold]Yes, the ID coding is TYGO2. The inner hub reading is GG000124[bold]. Hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have anymore questions. If you can't find the product please let me know so I can upload it onto ebay. Thanks What should I do guys? Trust him or not? 500pcs!!! Thanks...
Been reading a lot of the topics on here and I'm scared about the DVD-Rs I just bought. I must admit I didn't do enough research before purchase, or at least not enough to be satisfied. I wantd to know if these are real TY http://store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/taiyo-yuden-8x-dvd-r-media-silver-thermal-lacquer1.html They don't say High Quality as I've seen you all say that other fakes do. They have the GG000xxx code in the center of the discs, so I'm thinking they probably are legit, but just wanted a second opinion. Thanks for the help everybody. Long time reader, first time poster (I think first time).
According to the inner code of GG, they code out as 8X -R media. (Lifted from Doc TY's wonderful thread about Taiyo Yuden disks.) Taiyo Yuden rated speed & format/ media ID coding / inner hub reading 4x dvd-r = TYG01 / GD00xxxx 8x dvd-r = TYG02 / GG00xxxx 16x dvd-r = TYG03 / GH00xxxx 4x dvd+r = YUDEN000T01 / i don't know cuz i don't have any 8x dvd+r = YUDEN000T02 / TG00xxxx 16x dvd+r = YUDEN000T03 / TH00xxxx http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/296925 this is a great place to learn about TY and fake TY disks. Hope this helps.
hi downtown, welcome to your first post here on AD~ if i could get a proper link to the media you are referring to, i could tell you right away... i don't think you have much to worry about if it's clearly stated that you have also, if i'm not mistaken, cdrdvdmedia is a subsidiary of meritline.com~ or allmediaoutlet.com~ (not completely sure which of the two it is) all of the big specialty media online retailers that are located here in southern california are associated with one another; which is the "parent" company of the less known websites, i don't know for certain...but, i know there is a definite "link" between meritline.com + cdrdvdmedia and possibly allmediaoutlet; supermediastore is it's own entity (well, competition to meritline) and rima.com is too~ that's not something most people know, they purchase media wholesale from dealers/suppliers and re-sell them to the public, i know this because i have purchased directly from the big dealers/suppliers myself, naturally not on the scale of supermediastore, meritline, rima, etc...but enough to get my feet wet and know they all buy from the same supplier. you have nothing to worry about w/ those Taiyo Yudens, i can confirm for you 100% if i can get the link to the media which you are looking at to friggin work!...not your fault, im just frustrated at how the links get all messed up on here sometimes... docTY edit: BlivetNC beat me to the punch LOL, he was nice enough to kindly refer you to my thread...thanks for that buddy~
Thanks for the replies. Let's try this again... (put the http:// in front of that, cuz it's still not showing up right) www.cdrdvdrmedia.com/taiyo-yuden-8x-dvd-r-media-silver-thermal-lacquer1.html But by what you've said and what I see on the actual disks, then I'm not worrying too much that they're fakes. If I start getting a bunch of coasters, which I don't think I will, then I'll buy another pack of for sure legit TYs. But again, thanks for the help.
I just got Taiyo Yuden dvd-r from supermediastore, which seems to be well respected everywhere I look. However, the hub numbers do not coincide with what everyone is saying it should say. Mine say ygg25a 4049 70gg. Is it possible that they were sold phony dvd's?
