hey all.... i really wanna start using autogk to back up some dvds to a decent size without loosing too much quality BUT im totally lost and im curious about how to get the subtitles ????? for example - if i downloaded a movie it might come with a separate .srt or .sub file for the subs. THATS what i'd like to know how to do...... get my video file as well as at least two subtitle files. as always - thanks all, for any and all tips/advice !
In AGK, you load the source files from the DVD by selecting the IFO file of the title. You will then be offered the choice of subtitles (if they are present on the DVD). You can only select one subtitle and it will be part of the video on the output (permanent - not switchable). You can opt to use an external subtitle (a subtitle that is not on the disk) - either .srt or .sub/idx - but it will still be a permanent sub. If you don't wish permanent subtitles you have some options. If the avi can be played back on a standalone DVD player, then .srt files can be included as separate files on the disk - thus becoming selectable from the remote - but you have the problem of converting the original DVD subs to .srt format. If the avi is to be played back on a PC your media player can select .srt or .sub/.idx files - but the same conversion problem exists if they have to be converted from the original DVD.
hi attar, thanks for chiming in !!! .... no way - i definately do not want the subs to be permanent. i would love to have them seperately (the way they come most of the time with downloaded movies or the way you can go on line and download them to play with a movie you might have) as far as playback - i usually use convertxtodvd to watch in my living room..... so if i use autogk to get a good quality avi - how do i get those subtitles off of the DVD to match my movie file.
Assuming you will playback the AVI using a DivX compatible standalone player, you can use 'VobSub Configure' (part of VobSub) to create a single sub/idx file (which contains both subtitles) from the DVD. The AVI and the sub/idx are combined using AviAddXsub to create a DivX file. The subs can then be selected using the remote. There is no encoding of the video - so no degradation. I tested with a CD and a flash drive on a Philips player. http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/subtitle_tools/vobsub.cfm http://www.calcitapp.com/AVIAddXSubs.php
