I have a VCR that only has composite A/V connections. My receiver has composite, S-video and component. My TV only has composite and S-video. Normally I would just hook the composite A/V from the VCR directly to the TV’s composite A/V. However, my receiver says it can upconvert video signals to component or S-video. So now, should I connect VCR composite A/V to the Receiver’s composite A/V and have the receiver upconvert to S-video that I will connect from Receiver to TV?
Yes, connect the composite video cable to your reciever and if you are sure it can upconvert the signal, then you should only have one s-video cable from your receiver to your tv. Make sure and read the manual for your receiver just in case you have to set something up for the signal to upconvert. Good luck
Thank you for your confirmation. It is always nice to hear answers from someone experienced. What’s confusing, besides me being a novice, are the operating instructions. Especially for my receiver. It shows every cord connected when I know, or I think I know, that that’s not the proper way to hook things up. My next question is about the CD player. I thought it would be a simple hook up because it’s just audio. However, the CD player and receiver both have the normal line out/in (left/right)connections which I assume are just analog. They also have an optical digital connector. I would assume the digital cable would be better. So my question is, do I only use the digital, or do I hook up the analog and the digital? The books never tell you use one or the other, they always show hooking up both.
they do make cables that do what you are asking as well, and some even make them. i have a shop here that makes cables as such. coax to video coax to s-video video to s-video s-video to component component to hdmi/dvi but running through the a/v receiver, you will always have to turn it on just for it to 'switch' and pass through, unless you have a high end receiver that has a by-pass filter and lets audio/video pass through while off but using the receiver for upconversion is just a middle man in the picture and to an extent, degrades you picture quality. of course, if you have the money, by a better tv with component connections and s-video at the least for better video quality. by the way.......... what's a VCR ??? !!!
