I searched in vain for a post with this problem...it it is in here elsewhere, my apologies. This only occurs when I have tried to burn on a dual layer disk (dvd9). I have no problems with burning on DVD-5 disks at all. I use DVD43 then DVD Decrypter (the last version out for both of these) then I go to Nero Recode 2 (Nero version 6.6.0.14, NVE version 3.1.0.11) All goes well when burning to dvd 5 disk. I finally got a disk "Country Bears" that I wanted to back up for my toddler and Recode will not shrink it enough to fit on a dvd5. I tried burning it on a dvd9 and it gave me an out of memory error.

It's probably something simple like the process running on your PC during the operation are taking up too much memory. Try using the program and ending unecessary processes during the job.

    @BozoKlown -

Recorder: < 16X8 DVD DUAL> Version: A05a[/quote] - by any chance is this drive a 'Micro Advantage 16x8 DVD Dual' ?. The firmware for this burner may be out of date, thus not recognising the media correctly.

    - dunno if those extra devices are causing a problem

    - it's certainly not a memory issue

    - a-ha, methinks this smells of cheapy crap media. What are you using (pls don't say Memorex!)

    - splat!

Just a suggestion but if you are using a dual layer to back up this movie, I would not use Nero. I have used Nero for dual layer backup and had some issues with it, and the layer break. You would be better off dl DVD Decrypter and using iso read and then write mode. I backed up this movie for my grandaughter using Recode to a single layer disk. It is a Disney movie and usually there are several angles. Just go into Recode and tell it to Recode main movie, it makes it easier, unless you want all the rest of the junk on the disk. I have it easier if the movie just plays for toddler they don't like all the rest.

As creaky states check your firmware it may not be recognizing your disk.

I am pretty sure that is is in fact a Micro Advantage burner ( it was cheap to buy at the time) and the only dual layer media I could find was in fact the dreaded memorex......I will see if I can update the firmware and also will look for better media as well. Thanks

Creaky, it is the first one on the list....A13. I already went to the site and updated the firmware/drivers with the latest on their site when you suggested that it could be the problem. I haven't yet purchased some better (good) DL disks yet. I am right now trying to work through a problem with backing up Constantine as well as Country Bears. I am going to try doing Country bears with only the main movie and VOB's in DVD Decrypter and see if it will then fit on a dvd 5. When I had DVD Decrypter do the entire movie, in Recode it showed the main movie as being too large for a DVD-5 even without the titles or extras.....first time I have ever seen that. I have burned Constantine several times and Decrypter and Recode2 both show success but it will only play on my computer and won't on my standalone dvd player. My dvd-5 disks are TY02 and I turn everything in the background off and only burn at 4x. I am going to try using DVD FAB Decrypter before Recode 2 tonite and see if I get a different result.

    cool re the firmware.

you say ty02 re the dvd-5 media. are you sure they're genuine ?, ie can you tell us the codes around the inner hub on one of the duscs ?..
ps i did Constantine with just DVD Shrink on it's lonesome, and burnt as a normal dvd with standard Nero burning rom (sorry i don't use Recode)

I don't have a disk with me here at work but can bring one tomorrow and put in the codes on the disk itself. The DVD-5 disks are Fuji and DVD Identifier says they are Toyo Yuden T02 or something like that....my memory isn't what it used to be. I will give dvd shrink a try...it is installed but since it is supposedly same as recode, i just go ahead and use recode.

Ok, so which numbers do I need. I have the printout from dvd identifier also.

    this is it:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:YUDEN000-T02-000]
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.]
    Manufacturer ID : [YUDEN000]
    Media Type ID : [T02]
    Product Revision : [Not Specified]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4,482.6MB = 4.38GB (4.70GB)]
    Recording Speeds : [1x , 2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    [ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a disc with me and see some stamped numbers as well as some reflective numbers (look holographic). Which ones are they?

BB530A108309PG Stamped on non reading side of disc center of hub at hole. TG001159 Reflective on read side, hub area in dyed area. 0305 Reflective on read side hub area in dyed area opposite other number beginning with TG.
Creaky...btw, I successfully backed up Constantine last nite with DVD43 and DVD Shrink....didn't use any decrypter and went just fine, seems to play perfectly. Also backed up Kung Fu Hustle using DVD Decrypter and Recode 2 with no problems. Strange thing is I still cannot seem to backup Country Bears for my daughter.....it seems to lock up Recode2 and DVD Shrink, seems to show 4460 for the main movie alone not including menus or extras. I couldn't get DVD Fab Decrypter output to work with Nero or Shrink.

Thanks Creaky, I will try Arniebears advice with that and use DVD Decryper in the ISO read and write mode (not what I usually do) the see if Recode will let me back it up, with or without the extras. I am unsure from the post if Arniebear means to use Decrypter read/write iso of all the files and then only do main movie in Recode or to Decrypter read/write iso of only main movie and VOB's then do recode.
BTW, I bought those discs as Fuji on a 50 spindle for $20 @ wholesale club.

Creaky, what is the maximum size for a dvd-5 I should use to stay far enough away from the edge....I know that it is posted somewhere that the default may be too close for some discs.

    @BozoKlown

If you are going to burn Country Bears on a dual layer disk then use DVD Decrypter in iso read and then write mode, it will copy the whole disk.

If you are going to do the movie on a single layer disk, i.e. the Fuji's you just bought. Then rip your movie in Decrpter using file mode, then open up Nero Recode2 and open your file, choose your title and backup the whole disk or edit and do just the movie. Set your target size to 4334

my personal recommendation is 4300MB, even on top notch discs. others recommend closer to the edge but if you look at bottom of a dics when its done to 4300MB you'll see how close that really is
