Record direct from TV to DVD-recorder or player

    I need to record a 3 hour TV show onto my dvd recorder.I need to set up the time as i shall be away.The hiccup is My DVD-RW is 4.7 gb. and it shows maximum recording time of 120 minutes. how can i get the 3 hours onto this dvd.thanks

    In the recorder user manual does it not list the available settings, like standard, long play, extended, etc?
    My Panasonic machine, in the scheduling screen menu, has a recording 'Mode' setting that can be changed.
    For a 3 hour recording I set it to 'LP' which allows up to 4 hours.
