Recording directly to DVD

I am trying out Nero and trying to burn directly to a DVD+RW. It works fine but only allows me to record 1 hour 22 min. I assume this must be the default Nero value. No matter what I change, I can't change this value. I want to be able to record 2 hours.

Can anyone tell me what or where the settings are to do this. In default values, I have chosen "long play" on all the available output options, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

    Thanks for any help

I don't think there's a default time value in Nero.

I just assumed that was a default value as I can't find any way to make adjustments. I just figure there must be some way to tell Nero to use lower quality encoding to be able to burn directly to dvd disk a 2 hour movie recorded off tv.

What is the format of the video that you intend to burn (e.g. mpeg, avi)?

I'm trying to capture directly to DVD+RW as mpeg2. Avi's would be way too big to fit. I believe 2 hours of avi would be around 26 gig.

My experience with Nero has been that when using DVD-RW it will only write 1X. Using DVD-R or +R it will write at 4X 8X or the max. setting. I do not have any control over the speed of the RW disk.

    Bummer but there it is.

this is not a speed issue as related to 8x or 16x disks. It is an encoding configuration issue. My disks record fine but only allow 1 hr 22 min of mpeg2 to be recorded. I want to change the encoding bit rate to allow lower quality mpeg2 in exchange of being able to get more time on to the dvd.

Assuming that you are talking about Nero 7 -- Vision 4

You have only two choices offered to capture directly to DVD --

Choice #1 is an Mpeg-2 @720x480 and NTSC 30fps -- 1 hour 22 min is the capacity your DVD can hold. (approx.4G + the Title and menu.)

    Choice #2 is an Mpeg-2 @352x480 and NTSC 30fps -- 2 hour 51 min is
the capacity your DVD can hold. (approx.4G + the Title and menu.)

    ===============================================

Should you need to Record for a longer period -- you can always capture to your HD (Hard Drives today are available at a reasonable price with capacity of 400G soon Maxtor is pushing further to 500)

thank you for the info. I just thought I had a crippled demo or something as there is a button to configure the encoder which doesn't do anything. I am also demoing WinDVD Recorder which does have options to record different encoder settings directly to a DVD. I just don't really like the program as well as Nero 7 though.

I have plenty of firewire hard drives around, so storage space was not the issue. I just wanted to be able to record directly to a DVD to save a bunch of time.

Perhaps Nero will be updated to include an option to choose different record speeds directly to dvd.

I just recently upgraded from Nero 6 to 7 -- First impression is not that good -- This new 7 was pushed out the Nero bin just in time for XMas shoppers it looks like -- and it has a lot of bugs and shorthcomings in it. One that blows me is that you can apparently record to your HD with Nero HOME -- I have yet to find a darn button to click and do that !! So forget what I said about recording to your HD.

Best Wishes for the coming Holidays !

Using Nerovision 4, I have captured to hd just fine. You have to set your "default video options" from the NV4 main menu. I can tell it to record dvd video at standard play (which is about 2 hrs of program content). Then when you choose the "capture video to hard drive" button it works just fine on my system. You should not have to set your encoding options at the root level like this in my opinion. Once you get in to almost any of the recording modules, there is a button to "configure encoder" but it just flat doesn't ever do anything.

I do not have Nero 6 to compare it to so I don't know the differences. I sure think this Nero 7 has some great possibilities though. A lot of folks seem to be having issues though.

I may just wait and go with some other program for now.

Maybe you would want to try recording to hd from the Nerovision 4 module as opposed to the Nero Home module and see what happens.

    thanks again
