Hi First I would like to thank everyone contributing on this forum for their help. Its only because of your efforts that I am able to make copies perfectly. Well I just bought a Sony DVD840 external dvd drive and was making a copy from the hard disk and noticed that it was recording very fast as compared to my old computer drive. It was recording at a speed of 3.8-4.0 where as on my old sony computer it records at the speed of 2.4. On the dual layer disk it says it can record upto 2.4 so I was wondering how it can record at more than the recommended speed? Would that be OK to let it record at auto speed of 3.8-4.0 or I should change the speed on the image burn to 2.4. Thankyou Jaymk
Your DVD+R DL disc is rated at 2.4X, the original speed setting for DVD+R DL (and DVD+R/+RW discs, for that matter). The original DVD+R DL drives were limited to a speed of 2.4X chiefly because of limitations in the power of the laser diode--it required a lot of power to penetrate the outer layer and record to the inner layer. Newer drives have more powerful lasers, and many of them can record DL discs rated at 2.4X or 4X at 4X speeds, but only if they have firmware that recognizes the disc MID code in the first place so that it recognizes the required power settings. (This is the same for drives that record 16X media at 18X, 20X, and, yes, even 24X. Of course, those speeds are reserved for just a few seconds at the outer edge of the disc. It's a bit like saying a car can reach 150 mph, but only downhill on mountainous roads. Why bother?) Your Sony drive recognizes some 2.4X DL discs, knows how to record them at faster speeds, and has the power to do so. It's generally safer to stay at the 2.4X speed, though, even for 4X DVD DL discs.
Thanks Joeryan, Thats what you call knowledge. Nicely explained. I appreciate it. I have changed my settings to 2.4x. Thankyou Jaymk
