Ok I just bought a Sony NetMD MZ-NF610 and when I opened it I noticed that it doesn't have a mic jack. I have heard there are ways to record using a mic and the line in jack. Does anyone know how and could they help me in figuring it out. Thanks much

You need a mic preamp. Without experience, I'd take my mic and my md player to some electronics store to find a decent sollution.

Thanks. What is a Preamp? Is it something to like powerthe microphone or just an amplifier for the signal coming in?

Can be both, depending on the microphone.

Some microphones need external power (extreme case: you use earbuds as microphone), others have built-in batteries. Both need to be amplified to give useful results with line-in (loud enough signal to avoid background noise being clearly audible later).
