after recieving a registry error with my computer, i hooked up the hard drive to another computer as a slave drive, and i have all the files viewable. i have a couple questions.

    1) if i backup all of the files (program files, documents, etc.) on the hard drive except for the windows files, then reinstall windows after reformatting, then restoring these files, will it work like before, or will it not?

    2) is there anyway i can access the registry on the hard drive, which is set to slave right now? if i can, is there anyway of fixing it so itll work again?

    1. Most of the application that you've installed won't work especially if they have registry entry, or if they put files for example like dll files in the windows system32 folder.

    2. Im not sure if there are applications that can view registry file in your slave folder. And even if you can access it, i think it would still be difficult to fix it if you don't know the exact cause of the error.

    1. Documents, yes. Programs, no. You'll need to reinstall them becasue they require the registry entires to function.
    2. No.

Edit: was typing while ditri posted. :)

After you get the computer functioning again go to http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

This program will back up your registry. Make sure that your registry is functioning normally before you run it. There is another program there that defrags the registry leaving more space on the hard drive. These programs have been used and tested by many in top fields.
