it came into a little blunt trauma and the damn remote just stopped working. If you're familiar with the unit, that means I can;t use the surround sound option and will generally be a pain to operate. I saw a replacement on Ebay for $25 which is certainly cheaper than buying a new system, but I was wondering if anyone had had success with a universal remote in this situation?

I have a psp that I could conceivably use with irShell and I have a Comcast remote with an Aux key that could perhaps do the trick(?)

I realize I'm graspping at straws here, but I'd really rather not have to buy a remote for this thing.

Unless you can fix the remote yourself or have it serviced I think your only alternative is to buy another remote. I use a Logitech all in one remote and it works with all six of my devices with no problems and is fully programmable. You can get cheaper all in one remotes and I'm sure they would work just fine, but make sure when you buy it that it has all the features that you will need.
