hi, ive tired the search, and obviously google only comes up with commercial apps

but could people please recomend me a fairly powerfull free video encoder

basically the kind of app im looking for is something that can convert between various different formats such as Avi, mpg, mpg2 etc.

im developing a game and using direct show to render video to textures, but it doesnt seem to support a lot of the vids i already have on my pc, possibly something to do with the videos headers, is there an app that can display / edit this information also?

and so as not to take up another forum post with my dribble, what codecs come as standard on windows xp machines? as this product will be distributed to several people i dont want to have to include any codecs which may be illegal for me to do so, or add the user any extra hastle when attempting to play

    thanks alot
