Most routers have a remote web management interface where you can login from a internet browser, but it is usually turned off by default. If he turns it on, he should also change the password. Then he just needs to give you:
    1.) External IP address (http://www.copia.com/ip/)
2.) Router login name & password
3.) Local IP address of the device that needs ports forwarded to it (usually starts with 192.168)

Not quite the way. The easiest way is to use Windows' Remote Assistance or Remote Desktop to gain access to his desktop, then you can bang away the IP on his browser.

There is an easier way to access his PC. Just use Teamviewer. Google it and download it. It's free software. All your friend has to do is give you the user ID and Password and you can log into his PC and do what needs to be done to his router or any other problems.
