Ok I really need help!! And if this is the wrong forum (1) I apologize and (2) tell me which one to go to, please.
This may take some time so please bear with me as I need to explain what I have, what I want it to do, and how the hell do I get it to do it (if possible).
I am on satellite. I have everything running through my 'brand new' sony dvd/vcr player recorder (which allows me btw to burn from vcr2dvd and dvd2vcr). So basically everything is hooked up this way. (1) satellite in both tv and dvd/vcr; (2) cables running from satellite to dvd/vcr and another set of cables from the dvd/vcr to tv. Everything is working ok as I was able to record a history channel show on Andersonville Prison Camp today and it played perfectly ... complete with commercials! Now I want to dump the commercials and rerecord to another dvd. WHen I attempted to play the dvd on my computer it said there was nothing there. So ??????? Could it be that the show was just recorded but NOT finalized?
I have a vague idea that I should dump the show onto my hd and then edit the show prior to rerecording. But how can I do that when my comp says 'aint nothing there dummy!'.
ANY help will be appreciated guys. Also any pgms you guys think I should use to accomplish this miracle???? I have Nero, DVDDecoder, DVD Shrink, Cyberlink, CloneDVD to name a few.
New question ... to save me $$$ should I use a DVD RAM disc to record vice a 'normal' dvd disc?
    thanks again,
    Jim

Ok. Firstly; Open Nero and click Edit movie. Mount the disc and browse to the disc to view it's contents. If you recorded something, there is going to be something there, be-it MPEG II, AVI, VOB, or VTS files. Import the files into Nero's storyboard. Once on the storyboard go ahead and remove the commercials as you please. Once this is complete, and you are happy with the finished product, click the export option to create your DVD.

    Secondly. You note:

"New question ... to save me $$$ should I use a DVD RAM disc to record vice a 'normal' dvd disc?"

Not sure what that means, as the only type media you can use is
DVD-R or DVD+R for recording based on the specs of your DVD burner. So in essence use the one which suits your burner and burn the movie to the disc.

Thanks a lot. I'll give it a try today. I did find out what was wrong with the disc not playing on my computer ... I read the instruction manual last night (duh!!!!) and it stated to 'finalize' the disc if it was to be played on anythng other than what I burned in on. Y'know, sometimes reading the instructions can actually help!!! Anyway, thanks for the NERO tip ... I'll give it a try. ~~~Jim

OK guys ... I've reinstalled Nero AND finalized the disc. How do I edit the show using Nero's Edit? As in where the heck is the Edit program?

For editing DVD files, in terms of Nero, I believe it's NeroVision Express 3 that you'd need. I don't use NeroVison Express myself so I can't help you very much with the steps there. I think it's the "Make Movie" menu option that has the editing features. Load your DVD, launch NeroVision Express, select "Make Movie", then the blue "Browse for media" button. You can load and then edit each of your vob files.

There's lot's of software that will let you edit vob or mpeg2 files. But you want to take care not to re-encode your video during that step.

When I want to edit scenes from a DVD and then burn a new DVD I load the vob files into an mpeg2 editor like VideoRedo or Womble. I edit out the scenes I don't want and save it as a new mpeg2 file, a lossless process. I then load the mpeg2 files into an author program like TMPGEnc DVD Author to create new DVD files to burn. Anyway, that's my approach.

The important thing is not to re-encode the video when creating your new DVD files. The easiest way to tell if your software is re-encoding the video is the time it takes to write the new files. If it takes longer than 5 or 6 minutes for a 90 minute movie then it's re-encoding. The burning time is extra.
