    Friends,

I have a problem and I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can help me. I have recently bought an external SONY DVD RW DRU-720A JYC4 drive. This Sony DVD Burner is supposed to be able to burn CDs, single-layer DVDs and Dual-Layer (DL) DVDs without any problems. (I use Verbatim blank DVDs for my burning and I have found them to be reliable and not the problem.) I also have purchased Nero Version 6 as my burning software.

I am able to use a ripper program (like DVD Decrypter) without any problems. I also like to use IMGBurn to burn the iso files. The problem is with the format of the finished burned backup DVD copy I just made using IMGBurn. Instead of the DVD+R disc being in the same format, IMGBurn sets the Booktype automatically to DVD-ROM (and this is something I don't want).

Can anyone give me any advice/instructions as to how to change the booktype on my Sony burner?
I have tried to do this in the IMGBurner program. I open the tab called "Tools", then "Drive", then "Change Book Type", and then I get stuck. The program says:

"Please select the appropriate tab for your drive type. (If you don't know what you're doing, just click OK now!)"
The tabs are: Nu Tech, Plextor, RICOH, Samsung, BenQ, LG, LITE-ON, NEC.

Can anyone help me with an option I should try?

If I can't change the book type setting using IMGBurn itself, can I change it using Nero itself? If so, I would greatly appreciate any help in doing so.

Thank you in advance for reading this and helping me out with any thoughts or suggestions you all may have. I'm sure any advice given will be helpful for many other newbies as well. Thanks.

    Gifford, Al

Try the lite-on tab, change booktype for DVD+R to DVD+R. Just out of curiousity, why wouldn't you want your discs booktyped...most users prefer this setting.

Folks have been dying to finally get burners that booktype to DVD-ROM, which produces the most compatable burns. Many older players that refused to play any burns can now be used. A very desireable feature.

If you want to turn it off go to Tools-> Drive-> Change Booktype.

You should also be able to also use Nero, once set it should stay that way. When ready to burn in NeroExpress, next to your drive listing there should be an 'Options' tab, click it.

Thank you for the helpful responses.

The reason I don't want my DVDs booktyped to DVD-ROM is that my Sony DVD burner always messes up the burn when it's set to DVD-ROM and I'm hoping that if I switch the booktype to DVD+R, that this problem will end. Here's the specific problem I have:

When I try to burn a movie onto a single-layer DVD-R so I can play it on my standalone DVD player, there is always an error. (Please note that before I bought this external Sony DVD Burner, I had used DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink successfully to make backup copies on similar DVD-r's using another burner.)

The problem here appears to be that IMGBurn thinks it should only be burning a DVD-ROM disc, but it can't make a single-layer DVD-R into a DVD-ROM disc so an error results. The specific error message is:
"Book Type setting not supported for the loaded disc type".

This Sony DVD Burner should be able to burn single-layer DVD-r's so I don't know what the problem could be.
Any help or advice anyone can give me about this problem is much appreciated.

Did you go into Nero to unset DVD-ROM?

Doesn't make sense that a -R would trigger this.

Why don't you try another burning app? Go back to DVDDecrypter or try Nero seeing as you have it.

Fire up Nero InfoTool and see if your drive is listed properly, also check the ASPI and DMA tabs.

    Hello MysticE,

I have just tried Nero Infotool and it does recognize the external Sony DVD burner that I hooked up. When I tried the ASPI tab, there were two choices: Nero ASPI and System ASPI. When I clicked on the Nero ASPI, it gave me a message that "ASPI is installed and working properly." When I tried the System ASPI, it said that "ASPI is not installed (but this shouldn't matter since ASPI is working under Nero ASPI, right?).

DMA tab: I wasn't able to find this tab and I don't know what it indicates.

    Thanks for your help.

ASPI sounds fine, forget about the DMA as InfoTool might not read that way for externals.

Fire up Nero CD-DVD Speed with a blank in your burner. Go to Extra-> bitsetting. Here's how mine look, greyed out for -R.

Fire up Nero Express and burn your DVD-Video files. If it's an ISO created by Shrink choose Disc Image or Saved Project.

Your burner is a Lite-on as was mentioned (not one of my favorites). Maybe some help here, maybe a firmware update?

    Good Luck

What brand discs are you using? That is a Nero log, are you trying to use Nero or Imgburn...post a complete log from nero please. Did you install the firmware for that drive or is it original?

    Hello,

Thank you for all of the helpful responses. I believe my problem has been fixed. I went to Nero CD-DVD Speed with a blank DVD+r in the burner. Then I went to Extra-> bitsetting and changed the setting to DVD+R from DVD-ROM. So far it has worked fine.

Thanks again to everyone for their helpful comments.
