My problem is that when i try to backup a dvd movie, i get "reset occured" within 3-30 seconds. *In Nero*

Iv'e burned 11 backup's fine, also wasted around 60 discs.

Iv'e also used dvd decrypter, and alcohol 120%, also have errors.

Im using a MAD DOG External 7-1 dvd burner.

    My Computer Specs are

    ASUS Mobo
    2.0 GHz Celeron processor
    1,152 mbs of pc2700 ram
    USB 2.0
    a 40 & 80 gig hd @ 7200 RPM

Iv'e tried the newest version of nero , and other versions of nero. It came with NERO OEM SUITE, which ive mostly been using. Iv'e reinstalled 3-4 times.

Media wise im using Sony DVD-R Discs, no smudges // or scratches

    Here's the log of Nero

Quickly looking at your log . . . use Nero Burning ROM not Nero Express -

I apologize that it's written in German -

    [/b]HINT:
First, create zee folder for your work on your desktop OR somewhere on your HD where you can find it again. - Name it something that you'll be able to find. I named mine C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management. Now load your IFO, BUP and VOB files there - make sure they are in a folder named VIDEO_TS written like that (all in Caps) - some programs like DVD Shrink will make the properly named folder for you, others you must make the folder yourself - Nero needs that folder with all it's contents in order to work properly -

Burning a file made by zee DVD Shrink.
If you had used DVD Shrink to create a file on your HD you are truly in great shape. When you wish to burn, use the "File Browser" in Nero Classic (don't use Nero's Wizard), trace your path back to C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management. , you don't have to remember where your work is or if you need to do anymore work on it, it is completely finished, ready to go - -

OK zen, is everyone comfy ? Goot - its now time for - -
"Uncle" ScubaPete's German, goose Step by goose Step, Let's burn with Nero 6 Guide -

First - Do not use Nero Wizard -
    Please follow EXACTLY -
Vhen you open Nero Burning ROM, you vill be at zee "New Compilation" window. Directly under the title "New Compilation" is a choice block to choose either zee DVD or zee CD, choose zee "DVD". Directly under that click on zee "DVD Video Icon." Then click "New" in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT zee main screen.
You now are in zee "DVD Video" window. In zee left screen, click "VIDEO_TS". In zee "File Browser" screen, 3rd from zee left, trace your path to zee VIDEO_TS folder, zee one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in zee right screen. Click on zee top file, hold down zee "Shift" key and then click zee bottom file thereby hi-lighting zee entire column of files. Click and (holding zee left mouse button down) drag zee entire column of files to zee open screen, second from zee left and release zee mouse button. Now click zee icon on zee task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click "OK" and now, clear zee room, stand up tall and shout out, "Burn Baby, BURN" ! One more time, let me hear you say it, "Who's your Daddy Now ???"
Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!

(Wheeew, now I really need a cigarette)

NOW, STAND AWAY FROM ZEE COMPUTER ! !
Keep all fingers and toes away from zee Computer. Do not fold spindle or mutilate and never mess vid zee electron box vhen it's working - it could be hazardous to your health, Commander Jason is watching -
Go and have your coffee, vhen Nero is done, zee electronic wonder box vill let you know ;-))

    Enjoy your backup,

    Cheers,

    Pete

    Storm,

I had the same problem with an external writer that I had before - I thought it was because of the off-name brand but I end up finding out that alot of times when people use USb to write, they get that message. If you have a firewire outlet to use, try that and see if it works instead. I have heard from people with all different types of writers having that exact problem when they use USB. I have been using a SONY with Firewire for a long time and it has always worked fine.

Im thinking bout trying the same drive, except going internal. That'll take out alot of possibility's and possibly fix this error. But only thing that dont make sense, is the external has worked fine on 11 backup'd movies. So iunno what to do =\

    Hi Storm123,

The very first thing to do is to begin using a DVD RW disc until you solve your problem. Seem pretty sill to continue to lose discs when a single DVD RW disc would have saved you all of those discs.

It says you're burning an image - what kind of DVD "backing up" are you doing ?

I'm not seeing the Burning ROM ? Have you tried it ?

As I stated in my email to you we need information and a lot of it -
PLEASE, go over the list of questions I sent you - and answer them all –

What proggys are you using ? All of them !

Where did the files you're working with come from ?
Are you ripping an original DVD ?
Are you trying to copy a copy ?

    Are these downloaded files ?
What format are they in, RAR, Bin/Cue, AVI, VCD, SVCD, MPEG2, DVR, WMV, MPEG 2 DVD compatible, ISO or VOB's ?

What do you wish to do with them ?
    Burn them to DVD's ?
    A single (4.7GB) DVD ? A Dual Layer (8.5GB) DVD ?

    Pete

BTW, Having your burner connected via USB 2.0 is faster than FireWire and it rarely "goes bad".

Lastly, If it is easier, take us through your whole process and explain what you're doing step by step. I look at your posts and see that you don't wish to strain yourself typing. Look at my posts - -

AHH, ur DVD-RW idea is brilliant lol. Dunno why i didnt think of that, but great idea.

K heres my step by step process of what im doing.

Objective, to backup my dvd movies onto blank *4.7 single layer dvd-r discs.

    1. put movie in drive. "Note Downloaded"
    2. open decrypter
    3. decrypt all the vob etc. files into a folder / video_TS
    4. shrink them to fit on a 4.7 gig disc
    5. copy them to the dvd using NERO

Also *trying to backup data has the same errors*.

    Additional information

    - Programs that i Run -

    2 AIM exe's
My new radeon 9550 graphics card processes
    Firefox for IE
    Sometimes run MSN
    Winamp

    No Roxio software installed

And yes i installed Nero Burning Rom

So basically what it ends up with after the decrypt / shrink is a ISO, so basically im trying to copy that iso to a blank Sony dvd-r disc.

Your burner appears not to support Booktype setting, unless they have released an update (see above)

Also you need to check media compatibility here.

Firmware update is here ...did you do this?

Also you want to make sure you don't have Nero InCD installed - it's evil.

A quick Google search turned this up. Search is your friend. Really.

PS: I use external usb 2 dvd writer and only time problem I ever had with it was fixed by firmware update.

    Good luck

I don't fight burners. I would get something different. I would make sure it's installed internally and the IDE busses were set correctly.

I do not like the looks of the Sense codes or the Sense Keys in your initial Nero errors. Something seems seriously wrong with your burner to get these sorts of SCSI errors.

That is what I would do. that is me though.

You have almost made enough coasters to pay for a new burner.

Yup, cept i got till thursday coming up, for full refund or exchange, and the internal one thats pretty much the exact same is outta stock. So iunno

I think imma go get some DVD +R discs, and 1-3 DVD-RW discs, and see how it goes. I dont have many options left to do or try.

Im wide open for suggestions, besides trading it in or getting internal, cause external just completely owns, if it worked. Imma keep trying stuff, until sometime next week when i bring it back. But before then i wanna try as much as possible.

    Hi Storm123,

    Thanks for the feedback.

As LivnDGirl pointed out, Book type isn't supported - I seem to remember a problem with -R media and Book types so, let's forget about that.

    Let's try the following. -

Set your burning speed at 4X,

Your DVD high compatibility mode: set to "NO"

Set DVD Shrink's DVD Target size to Custom" and 4360MB.

As you're burning an ISO Image, Let's allow DVD Decrypter to burn it for you.

SO, lets use DVD to rip in the ISO Mode go to the guide in my sig that says, Shrink / Decrypter and use DVDD in the ISO Read mode to your HD then DVD Shrink - file - open image file, then process as usual. When getting ready to burn, select DVDD, ISO Image. (NOTE: You might wish to reset DVDD to ISO Write Mode before burning).
I use that formula whenever I am backing up series type DVD's. I like the way it burns better than Nero when dealing with ISO's -

Also since your exchange time is coming up, you might wish to consider another drive - I like externals SO I don't think that's the problem. LQQk at Plextors, Lite-on and Pioneer (I have 2 of them) (though Pioneer will not allow book type changes). All have extremely good records of accomplishment and are very reliable and trouble-free.

My thoughts on Book types -When dealing with older standalone players (over 2-yrs old) burning a DVD ROM will play in more players than anything else BUT as more and more pple are buying the $39.99 players that will play everything - I wouldn't worry too much about it. I do have a NEC and an old HP burner that I could use burning DVD ROM's BUT I use all 4 burners to do without and have had extremely few problems.

    ~ That's my 2-cents,

    Pete

Alrighty all, i brought it back few hours ago. And they got the same errors, also tested another one of the exact same one on the shelf, same errors. So the RMA'd the drive and sending it back.

I got a internal Memorex burner, i hope burners also arent like cds. Since u said memorex cds suck. I tested it , it works so far 1 burn 0 errors, i will reply again when i get 5-6 burns done and tell u how it goes. Thanks Scubapete for all ur help, trully. Also everyone else for your input. We tried, dont think it was us.

Tell me your thoughts about memorex burners, should really matter with brand as long as they work. I would have gotten a dif burner prob if they had anything else, but they didnt cept Sony burner.

    Well THANKS again~

    Hi Storm,

As Memorex doesn't make their burners so you're probably OK. The only burners with poor feedback are those labeled HP (don't know who makes them).

The Memorex media sucks - using decent media will help a whole lot :)

Again, try the guide in my sig. Those programs are so simple that if a problem crops up it should be a snap to trouble shoot :)

Best of luck Good Guy - we're rooting for you . . . LOL)

    awaiting your report -

    Pete
