If I want to resize a poorly-done aspect ratio in a AVI file, instead of re-encoding the whole thing with correct aspect ratio, is it possible to place it into a matroska container and use settings which tells video player programs (or haali splitter) to use an over-riding aspect ratio?

I have the tools Matroska Editor - AVI-Mux_GUI-1.17.8
    and MKVtoolnix 3.0.0

Maybe its possible even with these alone? I just dont know the settings as I am a noob :)

    thanks for help!

It can be done from MKVMERGE.
Open the input file, hi-light the video component,
select the "format specific options" tab and set the A/R.

Thank you, it worked like a charm! Now even regular Media Player plays it 16:9 by itself. I knew there was some advantage to MKV format after all ;p~
