Why ? AD already has a games specific site. Besides, why discuss old consoles ? seeing as how most of the children behave in the newer console forums, i can't imagine it would be better if the old consoles where being discussed.
Agreed..what is the point? There certainly haven't been any new developments on the ps1 hacking in the last 4 years, and most of the old sites have closed through lack of interest. A specific emulators section would be a lot more use.
I gotta say i have to agree with The Fiend and Janrocks. But I also like Janrocks idea of emulators now that would be a good little addition. Even if we can get them into the software section, if we can't get them to make a new room. Why not make it a part of the software additions...
Funny thing that.. every emulator is legal and usually open source freeware. Certain roms are also completely legal. The Sinclair roms are freeware/abandonware. They have an official site to download both roms and tape dumps for users of the original hardware. Some have been sold to Amstrad, who in their wisdom still uphold the copyright on 20+ year old software..thinking it obviously has some value. As for the rest of the consoles... It varies depending on age and license.. but most of us know how to make a rom dump from a cartrige or off a disk. I can't see where the legal aspect comes into it..seeing as we have hundreds of threads about console copy protect avoidance for the ps2 and xbox..and even direct links from profile pages to totally illegal bios file downloads. I am always careful to use the disclaimer about owning a console to have the right to use/keep the bios. This does not apply where hacked xbox and ps2 bios is concerned.
There is an interesting story on game consuls right from the very early ones on PCWorld magazine, but while I think the idea of using emulators sounds good at first debating the finer points of pong played on an emulator of a long defunked machine would cause me to loose the will to live...but who knows?
