Can someone make a suggestion as to the easiest method of getting content from a DVD to a PC as an MPEG or WMV file? Thanks in advance for your help.

There are various free programs that will do this for you such as A1 DVD ripper, AoA DVD Ripper or BitRipper. They can be found on the software page of this site. You can also find guides on how to use them on the guides page.

I prefer copying DVD's to DVD but I also have ripped DVD's to AVI format using DivX or Xvid compressions and obtained excellent results. I used a program called Tinysoft Super DVD ripper. It's an excellent program if you don't mind spending some dollar to use it (not freeware).
