For the past few weeks, I have been ripping my old DVDs using DVD Decrypter and converting the subsequent VOB file with Videora to A)make it a viewable mp4 file my iPod touch can play and B)create a digital back up copy on my computer that wasn't ridiculously huge. However, I ran into a problem with the movie Shoot Em Up. The encryption is beyond anything the now defunct DVD Decrypter can handle and I am at a loss. I tried DVDFab, and while it was able to rip the movie, it ripped it into an ISO file, rather than ripping using the IFO method I was used to with Videora for converting. Is there another program that will convert ISO files into viewable mp4 files for iPod touches and other such devices? Is there better (FREE) ripping software that will allow me to rip one huge VOB file which Videora can then convert? Any tips or suggestions is appreciated. I am not computer illiterate by any means, but at the same time I am fairly new to the ripping, decrypting, and everything else that comes with backing up DVD files and converting them into other electronic formats. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thanks for the response. Thi is my problem though. I have DVDFab and I can't find the option anywhere to change it such that it rips it as one big VOB file instead of as an ISO file. Every rip I do only creates an ISO file. I have looked all over and must just be missing somethign obvious. Where is the setting to change the rip so that it creates a VOB file (which Videora would be able to convert) and not the worthless ISO file that I am unable to do anything with? Please help!

I am not sure how DVDFab Platinum's setup is, but with DVDFab HD Decrypter, the free version, you can output as an ISO or A folder with your VOB files. However, it will create a number of VOB files, not just one. If you want one single VOB, use DVD Shrink and in "Edit"->"Preferences"->"Output Files" un-check the option "Split the VOB in 1 GB chunks". This will create 1 VOB. Should take just a few minutes. DVD Shrink will open the ISO made by DVDFab Platinum.

if you still haven't found a solution to your problem try this, an iso is a image back up to your original dvd you can use alchol 120 or any software that will give you a virtual drive, and you can mount that image to the virtual drive, and then you can rip it with dvd decrypter, try it and see if it works. Good luck. also i have found that some copy protection is not easy to get around off so if you should have anydvd installed on your computer this will remove copy protection and you can then back up your dvds.

Ammm...might want to explain again...Once you have the image on your Hard drive, what's the point of using DVD Decrypter?

Thanks for the suggestion on DVD Shrink. Essentially I used DVDFab, which is free, to rip the encrypted disc, and then took the encryption free ISO file, ran it through DVD Shrink (which ran super fast since it was pulling from the hard drive rather than off the disc) to make a VOB file. Finally I converted the VOB file with Videora to make a usable mp4 file for my iPod. Most of my old movies can just use DVD Decrypter and Videora, so this usually isn't a problem, but it's nice to know I have another work around for future purchases that my usual method may not be able to handle. And the best part is that all the programs...DVD Decrypter, Videora, DVD Shrink, and DVDFab...are all free, so I was able to continue backing up my DVDs with no cost, even newer DVDs with tougher encryption. Thanks for all the help everyone!

To the guy who suggested AnyDVD, thanks for the suggestion, but one of my goals was to do this with no cost. It may be a program I look into in the future, but for now those 4 free programs seem to be able to get the job done and work in good harmony.

I Know you said you want to use free Programs, BUT DVDFab Platinum Will Create just 1 MP4 File on your Hard Drive. Once you Buy DVDFab Platinum the updates are free for Life. Maybe if you download the Trial Version you might Like It. Can't hurt and the Trial's FREE.

I wasn't specific enough. I used DVDFab HD Decrypter. It runs for free (you can purchase it for additional features). It was able to crack Shoot 'Em Up so I could rip it, so I was quite pleased. It has an option, if you buy the program, to rip and convert to mp4 in one step (rather than the three it took me), but for no cost, I still prefer the route I took.

Well, I meant crack as in it cracked the encryption, which DVD Decrypter was not able to do. Thats what I meant.

The free programs work very good. No reason to pay money for virtually any program. Any project can be done for free.

I am sure it does. But when DVDFab HD Decrypter is totally free, what incentive is there to use a program that will require me doing somethign in 30 days, when I have one now, in the same family of products, that does what I need it to do, and will always remain free doing so! Shoot 'Em Up was just released not too long ago, so if it was able to decrypt that, then it should satisfy my needs for quite a while.

DVDFab HD Decrypter and DVDFab Platinum have the same decrypting engine. If you buy the full version, you don't get a better decrypter, you just get the other features, that can be replaced with free programs also.

to each their own i guess. i kinda like having all the features. it is almost a one click process, that is what i like, just the convenience factor i guess.

    No problem with convenience!!
The thing is, the less steps you take, the less you learn. For me for example, is not all about the $40 bucks or so(I am familiar enough with torrents:~)!), it is also the control and flexibility that I have with the whole process.

completely understand what you are saying. i have used the free programs, and i just really like the that this program is so easy to use. i guess that is why we live here, we each get to choose.
