I have read that DVD Decrypter shouldn't take too long to rip a DVD (somewhere around 30 minutes, give or take) but when I rip my DVD's, it takes 2 hours or more. Same with if I use DVD Shrink to rip. Am I doing something wrong? I know when I rip on my MacBook using MacTheRipper it takes the 30 minutes or so. Suggestions?

Make sure that your drives haven't slipped into PIO mode, they need to have DMA enabled.

Direct Memory Access....right click my computer->properties->Hardware->Device Manager ->IDE ATA/ATAPI contollers. Look at both channels, if anything is in DMA uninstall the device and reboot, XP will find the correct drivers upon reboot and install them in DMA mode.

Thanks. I did that, but they are in DMA mode.

    Hi ecargo
Under 'current transfer mode' for your drive(s) is ultra dma mode & a # listed there?

What are your pc specs like processor and memory?

Keeping up on pc maintenance like virus/spyware scans, disc cleanup, system defrag?

    I have a Dell Dimension 8200. It's 2ghz, 512 RAM. If you want more detail, here's the link: http://docs.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/specs.htm

My scans, system cleanup, and defragging is all fine. I keep up with that regularly. I'm actually rather computer compentent which is why this ripping time is baffling me.

Where would the current transfer mode for my drives be?

Ah good to hear you do the pc maint bit - alot of people don't.
In device manager under the ide ata/atapi controllers where LOCOENG posted you can find it. Sometimes it will say 'dma if available' but under 'current transfer mode' pio mode (slow mode) will be listed.

Unfortunately, my settings match yours so it must not be a problem there.

hmmmm ok if both of your primary and secondary channel have ultra dma mode look in task manager when you are ripping. What's the CPU uasge and memory in use?
2 hrs is a bit long for your specs.

Yep - may just want to take a peek at what's going on, what's running, memory is use etc while doing a rip. May shed some light on the time it's taking.

If the disc is dirty, scratched etc will slow things down but if happening to all discs then need to look futher.

It does it regardless of the disc. I've never had a short rip. And my uages all look okay. Any more suggestions? :)

Post back what task manager has for CPU Usage % and what's under physical memory (total, available, system cache) in the performance tab.

Also how many drives do have to rip from on this pc?

I just realized that I rip from my external DVD burner, which is connected via USB (since my computer doesn't have an firewire ports). I think that may be the problem. Right?

So your macbook is a different system than this slow one?
If so, the external USB drive could be the culprit. Is is possible to try ripping from an internal drive? Or hook up the external drive to the macbook and see if you get slow times there as well.

    @ecargo
Could be if you are using a 1.1 usb hub. Using a 1.1 or 2.0 usb hub?

How about the make and model of the drive - riplock issue maybe? But if you hook this external to the mac and get 30 min rip times then that wouldn't be the case.

    I'm using a 2.0 hub.

I will try later tonight to hook up the external burner to my Macbook and see how it goes.

It might be underpowered. Does the drive run off AC Power or is it relying on the USB. Also, what is your drive speed? 2x 4x 8x?

It runs off AC power. The drive speed is 16x.
