background info- ok so i bought an xbox 360 off ebay that was used a little while back.i flashed it and it all worked fine. then for a day it would freeze withing 20 minutes of me turning on the console. then it went away for about a week and then it came back, but it came back worse. i would turn it on and then it would go withing 1 minute until finally i got the rrod. i ordered the xclamps and thermal paste but it turns out i dont have the torx 8 screw driver which im probably going to have to go out and buy. anyway, i went to go see if somehow by a miricle the thre red lights went away and i turned on the xbox but i forgot to plug in the av cables. so i plugged them in while the xbox was gone and magically the 3 red lights disappeared. then after about 3 minutes, i got two red lights. quadrent 1 and 3 and from my understanding that just means its over heating. what i dont understand is how could it overheat within a few minuted of me turning it on. it does this every time i turn it on and when i leave it in about 5 minutes after that the fans shut off too. so my questions are..... what do you think of this? what should i do? should i attempt the x-clamp fix? my console is still under warranty but my sticker is messed up so should i go buy a new sticker? any other advice?
I had sent my console in to MS with a cut sticker, and they fixed it without a question asked. It sounds like your console is on the outs. I might give them a call, tell them you are getting the RROD (to make sure they actually will send you a warranty). And if/when they do, go ahead and just make your console rrod, and send it to them.
Use the penny method and put them on the memory as well as a little of ARTIC 5. Use the washer and nuts method instead of the x clamps. Also replace the thermal grease with ARTIC SILVER 5. Also get the tailspin fan and mod it with the 12v instead of traditional 5 volts. This way the fan will spin quicker. Get a 40x40x10mm fan (or XCM fan if your heatsink supports it)and run it at 12v also for the GPU if you have the newer heatsinks. (12v may be found using the point on the BOARD or by using the 12v from the DVD ROM, i like using the DVDROM power.) I dint all this to mine after having the same symptoms you were having and had gotten RROD like 7-10 times, and after doing all of the above my xbox has been running cool and hasnt gotten a RROD for the past 6+ months and been playing fine on XBOX LIVE. Total estimated time if you know what you are doing is: approx 1hr30mins For the inexperienced: i would estimate 3-5hrs. ONLY CON is your is that the FANS WILL BE LOUD. Better louder than having RROD though! SOUNDS LIKE TOO MUCH??? then get another Xbox or send that one into microsoft and pay 80 bux!
