When installing linux is there a possibilty of making your ps3 a really big brick or is there no chance of bricking it.

Can i use FW 1.6 to install linux becoz some guides are saying to use the 1.5 FW and some guides are saying to use the 1.6 FW which FW do i use? . Thanks and happy PS3 GAMING

Has anybody installed VLC on Fedore Core 5 on the PS3?

I am having endless troubles trying to get it running. When I double click the .rpm file to install VLC, it gives me an error about not enough information or something (will look up the exact error when I get a chance).

I then went into the command prompt and typed rpm -Uvh vlc.rpm and it gave me the error that a bunch of dependancies have not been installed. I am slowly tracking down each one, but it is a real pain.

Is there an easier way? Am I being a complete noob?

    Thanks for any help.

I actually don't think anyone cared. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, I'm just telling it how it is. I might care if i knew anything about linux. It seems people just aren't as helpful as they used to be (with the rare exception).

There was a "hot" time for this thread, when everyone was getting settled in together. Now most people have it figured out and have moved on.

Personally, I help when I can, but just like you, I'm not familiar with Linux. Also, my problems weren't with linux, it was actually me. I was doing things wrong myself, and a lot of the time this is the case, making it slightly less motivating to try and help. Like I said though, I would if I could. ._.

I know nothing about Linux. By start up the GUI, you mean bring up the XMB?

Oh yeah, and If i don't like Linux, is there anyway I will be able to get back in to the PS3 OS?

One more thing. Do I burn that 1 ISO, or unpack the ISO, and burn contents of the iso to disc?

I burned the ISO, not the contents.

Once in Linux, bring up the terminal (you'll learn this all quickly-> ALT+ESC) there's a "boot game os" option under applications or something, and it can be made into a desktop icon.

Additionally, whenever you power on your PS3, before Linux starts up, you can type "boot-game-os" to boot into PS3 instead of linux.

I have successfully installed Fedora Core 5 and can login to user GUI and everything is great the problem i am having is setting up the network settings so i can connect to the internet via the wireless card in the ps3. I can connect fine in the ps3 game os but i would like also to connect in Fedora Core 5 to use the firefox browser.

If anyone can please shed any light on how to do this with full instructions i would very very gratefull.

I have read through some forum posts and other people are having the same problem installing fedora as I am, after typing 2 for a full install I get: "libgcc-4.1.0-3.ppc.rpm : Header V3 DSA signature : NOKEY, Key ID 4f2a6fd2" I have the right iso file and I have burnt it to a dvd twice but still no luck, is there anything else I can try?

Hi, I just put "psubuntu" or 7.10 on my ps3. I don't know anything about linux. Can someone help me to do the following.
-upgrade firefox to the latest version
    -upgrade flash
    -upgrade java
****getting wifi to work**** (I have ethernet and it's not a pain, but wifi would be nice. If you could either link me to some noob friendly instructions or post them on here, I would be very thankful! thanks in advance!

I need help, I am currently installing Fedora Core 5 on my 80 GB PS3. I have intiallized the bootloader and am being asked to insert the Fedora Install DVD. I have the files unpacked and burned to the disk and it will intialize on the PS3 however, shortly after it begins it gives me an error message saying that the source/Fedora/base/stage2.img file is missing. I have checked the disk and the file is on there but it says it's not and gives me the kboot prompt again. What should I do?
