AHHH!!! I booted from disk with a program to change windows passwords, becausei couln't remember my administrator password, and it changed some thign in the registry! Prior to this, my computer was runnign absolutely sweet, because i got AVG antivirus and it cleaned everything! Now, my computer takes about 5 minutes to start up and log on and be ready to use!! This is awful!! I have defragmented the drive, done a chkdsk, tried a system restore, and i even got registry mechanic to try and sort it but it still takes years to start up!!! Can anyone reccommend anything other than reinstalling windows or doing a repair install?? Please please please! Thanks, Billy
billybob, check the event viewer. It should be in application. Check system too. See if there is a program not releasing when you shutdown. If there is, it causes the computer to write all of the info in memory, and then deal with it on start up.
He said he did a restore, but I wonder if he went back far enough. What program did he use? If it was ok until then, the program is buggy or changed something. EDIT> I'll just go ahead and throw this in too. Check your system information, software enviroment, startup programs, and look at what all is there. I bet the program he installed is doing a lot behind the scenes. EDIT AGAIN>Is your new antivirus doing a scan at startup? Maybe even at shutdown too.
How do i check the event viewer? My anitivirus isn't scanning at startup, no, or shutdown. How do i do this? Thanks cody, And cheers anyway darthnip. Pllease reply cody.
To check the event viewer. It depends on the way you set up the start menu. Go to start, programs, see if administrative tools are in the programs folder, if not go to accessories. Either way, click on admin tools, then event viewer. You'll see application, security, system, and maybe aceeventlog. Click applications, look for red circles with an x in it. If you have one, click it, then click the blue link, then click to send it to microsoft. It will only take a few seconds, and you will get a reply. If you don't get a reply, then help and support is not working. Note the event ID, and the description. Do this for the application, security, and systems folders. This will be a start. Let me know what ya got.
i have under start - all programs - accesories - system tools: Backup Character map Disk defrag Disk cleanup and other things but no even viewer. Is there a runcommand for it?
Ok heres what I got. Then in an error called “messenger” there was no blue lick, instead there was… Same here, no blue link. Just: and here: I got about 100 of the above two, and about 40 each of the first 2. Then theres: There was a blue link for this one: But it also said next to the link : I found no other one THAT WERE DIFFERENT to the ones above, apart from this one, which ddidnt have a blue link, but said:
Nothing jumps out at me there. On the last line of your last post the NaiFiltr.sys is a driver for McAfee Anti virus scanning engine. Its not a Windows file. Does the date of any of these Events match the date you booted from disk? Try taking System Restore further back.
I think you may have to end up reinstalling Windows billybob. The fact that this program is freeware and that it comes with this warning :THIS SOFTWARE COMES WITH NO WARRANTY WHATSOEVER. THE AUTHOR IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE (MIS)USE OF THIS SOFTWARE! It's VERY ALPHA yet, and relies heavily on undocumented structures and methods. You have been warned! would have detered me. You might try contacting the guy,he seems pretty keen on getting feedback. However if you hang in here someone else may be able to help.
Oh shit. I really reall can't reinstall windows, i was reccommended a repair install by someone else, do you think that would work? Its the family computer i screwed up so i can't reinstall windows, it has everyones work on it etc. Please someone come up with a lifesaver.
try the repair but save everybody's work just in case something else happens or if you have to end up re-installing windows from scratch.
