I just got a S.M.A.R.T. error message during boot up. What exactly does that mean? It says that a hard drive failure is imminent.

Download the diagnostic disk from the manufacturer's website, and run the program to be sure.

It means the hard disk is failing and time to back it up before it crashes.:>

hi, this thread still open?? anyway, i have the same problem...how do you go about backing up the HD when it wont let you boot windows?
i have tried it as a slave in my other pc but it wouldn't boot up either until i took the dodgy drive out again.
i am almost ready to send it away for recovery unless somebody can save me some money!!! : )

it sounds like it failed already if you tried it in your other PC

umm, that's what i thought (but was kinda trying not to think!!!!)

with the smart message comes the option to hit F2 to continue.

If the smart thing is just a warning then F2 should surely boot windows but it just gives me a screen saying there is a file missing (can't remember what)....

bugger! thought this smart thing was supposed to let you know BEFORE it happens!!!!!!!!!!!

    thanks for the reply.

Use a Live bootable disc like linux to retrieve yeah files. Its a disc that boots into a windows like environment even if the system wont boot to retrieve data. If you need one pm me. I have a excellent one.
