S-Video

Hey I just got a 27" tv. It has a s-video plug in the back. Just wondering what the quality diffrence would be watching a dvd on composite(Yellow,white,red plugs) compared to S-video and is it worth the upgrade? Thanks

 

Yes it is worth it. If the tv has Component Video inputs use those instead of S-Video.

It does have component jacks, wondering if the quality on a dvd will look any better running through a component rather a s-video cord, would it be like 5% better? I find the S video looks great.

Component video as a technology is better than S-Video. Since Component Video has more bandwith for color than S-Video does. This means that color will be balanced and vivid yet natural with the same crispness (accurate Gray scale) of S-Video.

Where component video truely shines is its ability to do progressive scan imaging on a budget. If your tv set and DVD player are capable of 480p then component video is you only option if you want to maximize video quality. Is your tv set capable of 480 progressive scan (480p)? (or to say) Is it an EDTV, HDTV, or just a standard def analog set (480i)? If so is your DVD player a progressive scan DVD player?

As with anything proper calibration is a must in any case!

Its a CRT 27" flatscreen. My dvd isnt progrssive scan but it has component cords and my tv is a flat tube>? would it be worth it?

Quality is alway subjective. Since I know that it is better on some level I think I make myself see a diffence. If the store would let you return the cables after you have used them I would recommend trying them out to see if the gain is worth it to you.

As a side note; Some low quality tubes convert component video signal to S-Video before proccessing (because its cheaper to do so). A set built this way wouldn't benifit from component video at all. The only way to know is to test and see. Component to S-Video modulation has given Component Video a bad name.

Its one of the reasons people think salesmen are faking when they push these better connections (S-Video and Component Video). I have only heard of Componet Video to S-Video modulation in cheaper analog CRTs.
