I have a Samsung CD/DVDRW identified as TS-H552B behaving badly. It is not detected though set up as Slave on a MoB? with only one IDE cable, if I uninstall the secondary IDE under device manager, the next boot finds the CD/DVDRW but will loose it again at the next boot. If I only Restart the computer, it remains detected.
The drive seems to work well when detected. I removed and cleaned the pins of the IDE cable but symptoms persist.
Is this simply a driver issue? I am puzzled since it seems to work when detected. I have found a driver download but am hesitating while trying to figure out the whys and the whats. Any suggestions?

I'm confused. If you only have a single IDE cable, I assume that it is the Primary with the HDD as master and the DVD drive as slave. Is this correct? What devices are showing up on the secondary IDE? What are the device showing up on both the primary and secondary channels? If you actually have a secondary IDE on the motherboard, why not purchase another IDE cable and put the DVD drive on that channel and make it the master. You shouldn't have to load a driver. The WinXP drivers should work.

    Laddyboy,
It is one of those shoebox sized boxes apparently home built (not by me). I can only view primary IDE on MoB. There is one cable, HDD as master DVD as slave.
No DVD/CD detected until I uninstall secondary IDE ATA/ATAPI controller from device manager. On next reboot, it detects DVD/CD and all is fine until I reboot again at which time DVD/CD is no longer detected. If I Restart instead of Turn Off computer, DVD/CD remains detected until I turn off and then once again... no DVD/CD.

I guess I don't really have any suggestions, although I don't understand why a secondary IDE channel is appearing if it doesn't exist. What devices if any, appear to be installed under the secondary IDE channel? Maybe you can post a screenshot of the Device Manager screen with the IDE channels expanded (i.e. click on the plus). Can you determine the MoBo manufacturer and model. Maybe there's a BIOS update that will solve the problem.
