Samsung SH-S182M won't recognize TDK 16x DVD-R

I just bought a 100-pack of TDK 16x DVD-R, and my Samsung SH-S182M will not recognize them. When I put it in the drive it just spins endlessly. I have tried firmware SB01 and SB02. No luck.
I can't even get a reading of the media with DVDInfo.
Any chance this is a software problem that can be corrected?

    Hmm that is strange...

Have you tried another brand of media in your drive?

Have you tried cleaning the laser with a cotton bud and some rubbing alcohol?

It recognizes Verbatims, but even with Verbatim I am getting bad burns. I have burned about 50 Verbatims with it in the past just fine.

I was afraid it might be dying.
Last night I was able to get 3 good burns using Verbatim.
I think (part of) the problem was that I was using a USB Hub, which was interfering somehow (I thought it was a good hub). I connected it straight to my laptop and got 3 good burns.

Still won't recognize the so-called TDKs.

How many burns should I expect to get before my burner dies?
Does lightscribing wear it out faster than regular burning?

You can expect over 2500 burns before it dies, if you've got a good drive.

Also, I am not sure about the lightscribe thing, but it sounds logical.

Thing is, the drive you have is pretty good. Is it an 18x burner? If you haven't had it for long, wring up the manufacturer and try and get it swapped claiming a faulty drive! :)

Thanks for the info - hopefully I will be able to keep going with Verbatim.

I would still love to hear from anyone who has tried to use TDK-branded media with this drive. I want to know what the problem is.

Allthough it could be a drive thing/firmware thing...I am more prone to thinking it is a Media problem. TDK, in general, aren't very good. The dye used in the making of the disks is poor compared to Verbatim etc and it quickly fades and deteriates etc...

Yes good point, could be. Make sure you have a decent enclosure for your drive if it is an internal mounted externally.

I just bought 300 Taiyo Yuden Valueline from Shop4Tech using the awesome deal i found on techbargains.com - $17 for 100 Taiyo.

I gave the so-called TDKs to a friend.
Ran DVD Info on his drive, and it reported Media ID Daxon0016s.
So I guess Daxon makes TDK discs.
My external enclosure is a SYBA 525|SD-U2F-525PT.
The newegg reviews said it was good.

So should I tell my friend not to use the TDKs?
Will they lose their data a lot faster than the Verbatim/Taiyo?
What should the respective life spans be for a good burn?

    1. He shouldn't use TDK anyway, let alone those disks. TDK usually make their own; I wouldn't let those disks near my burner...

    2. Yes, it's all down to the qualty of the dye on the disks. Taiyo Yuden use top qualtiy dye.

    3. 2500 burns or so... Time isn't important rly, it's tha laser.

The enclosure sounds fine. Just make sure your USB ports aren't faulty etc.

Nothing but trouble with my Samsung and TDK's. Bought them as a package from Newegg. The TDK's give the Samsung nothing but grief!

    Let me elaborate.

Sometimes it doesn't recognize the lighscribe side, sometimes it doesn't recognize the dvd recordable side.

I have a Liteon as well. No problems in it.

I thought the Samsung was going bad. I spent all kinds of time trouble shooting the dang thing. Updated firmware just to be certain, no positive effect.

Hard to blame just the discs when the Liteon will recognize them.

You're drive (the samsung) isn't great rly, so is boudn to be picky about media. The LiteOn is v good make, so will take most media.

    Also,
Yeah, but doesn't make the disk good either. My burner will reconise Memorex (CMC MAG), does that make them good?

    Update:
I got the Taiyo Yudens in the mail, and my Samsung SH-182M is very slow to recognize them. It works ok, but its really slow, so sometimes I get annoying error messages in my DVD burning software.
I don't know if I just got a bad drive or what..
I emailed Samsung tech support telling them they need to fix firmware.. no response.

I guess next time I will buy Lite-On and not Samsung.

@Ripper I disagree with your opinion of the 182M. Mine works very well but I only use Ty, Verb and occasionaly Ritek. I also have the 18x Liteon and the 18X Lg models and I enjoy them all. Maybe I'm just easy. LOL

You can disagree but it doesn't change the fact that it's not a great drive overall.

Also, I like LiteOn and LG, so...

@Johnnyb, does your Samsung recognize your Taiyo Yuden media right away, or does it take about 20 seconds? Do you ever get messages in your burning software that you need to insert blank media when you already have one in there?

No I have no problems with the Ty media and get some of my best dl burns(verb) with the Samsung. @Ripper Facts, like beauty, seems to be in the eye of the beholder.
