Hi all i have been having problems burning to dvd-r with my old sony dvd-rw q28a drive ( nothing would burn ). so i figured i would buy a new drive (Samsung SH-S202J/BEBE 20x DVD Writer).

    Product info:
    http://www.cclonline.com/product-in...ry_id=121&manufacturer_id=0&tid=sh-s202j/bebe

the drive came a couple of days ago and i installed it the same way my sony was installed (secondary master)it reads cdrs dvdrs everything as my previous burner did , but it hasent solved my burning problems, im still gettin the same issue.

When i insert a blank dvd-r it changes the drive name from E:dvd-rw ram to E:cd-drive .(this is also what my sony started doing after it stopped burning dvd-r.

when i open a burning app eg: clonedvd2 , imgburn , nero , alcohol it recognizes the media inserted as dvd-r blank , when i progress to burn with clonedvd2 it just sits there saying writing but does nothing so i have to reboot.and leaves a little ring on the underside of the disk, so something is burning.

if i try burn with imgburn it just stays at writing lead-in and i have to manually reboot also to free the system and the drive.and also writes a mini ring

i cant understand whats going on DMA is enabled , ive checked lower and upper filters , there fine , checked aspi, even did a fresh install of xp with same results . i dont know whether to send it back to ccl computers, but i just wanted to check theres nothing i missed .

    any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advanced - wiimii

hi i recieved the replacement drive today , installed it , same results its just burning coasters (burns a small ring) so it has proven the drives not at fault hmm.

one thing i have noticed though is when attempting to burn with imgburn, my device buffer stays at o% at all times , and "writing lead-in" is just displayed and i have to reset to free the system as i said previously .

when attempting a dvd-video (VIDEO_TS,AUDIO_TS) burn in clonedvd2 it just displays "writing" and does nothing just stays at 0%.WTF

could this possibly be a PSU problem like the dvd burner is not recieving sufficiant power to start a burn?,ive also ( with this new drive ) updated the firmware to the latest via samsungs automatic update manager firmware SB02 i believe,

i really need someone who has encountered these problems before to help, ive made over 20 coasters with this problem( tiny ring around inner circle is burnt) and i dont know what else the culprit could be?????

psu or hdd maybee ????? please help thank you for reading and thanks for any future advice. wiimii

im thinking of buying a pci ide controller for the writer , would this bypass the sis chipset of my motherboard as i think it is a chipset /drive incompatibility issue,

I had this problem with a burner but can’t remember what I bloody did? I know I set it up as master and changed the ide ribbon cable think I did something else but try them suggestions first see if that works also uninstall the chipset drivers and use the windows built in drivers try the cable and the master setting first then the chipset drivers if that doesnt work i'll try and remember if i did anything else

well thanks for posting first of all, i already tried using windows/microsoft drivers and have tried 2 new ( out of the packet ) cables, still wont have it,

i am really confused because i dont know wether to buy a pci ide controller or a new mainboard ? but if i buy a new mainboard it means buyin a pci-e vga card , ddr2 mem also, wich i havent got the money for

i just want to know whats causing this so i can nail it and replace the (culprit) part.

    asus k8s-mx,1.5gig of ddr1 memory,athlon64 3700+ cpu.

    thanks - wiimii

You need to post a Nero log then so we can see what’s going on have you tried changing the power lead for your burner over for another 1 usually got a few spares in the case also when doing a burn make sure you’ve got no anti virus running or anything else in the background

theres not a lot of log to post other than :

    11:06:36 caching of files started
    11:06:36 caching of files completed
    11:06:36 burn process started at 4x (5,540kb/s)

    hangs at 6% lead-in

The full log will be in c:/program files Nero
Have a look in all the folders until you find the full log just open every text file until you find the correct one what version of Nero are you using did you try changing the power cable as suggested?

If I remember correct when I had this problem like you, I would burn a disk the buffer level would be 0% during the burn and the pc would lock up or the program would in Nero the time counted up but couldn’t cancel the burn etc in the end forced to restart the computer by turning it off and when the pc had restarted when I looked at the disk it had only burned a small ring I’m sure I updated the bios for the motherboard

What you can try to see if it’s your power supply disconnect any devises you don’t need unplug all harddrives DVD roms etc just have your main hardrive and your burner connected might be a power issue
